When faced with tight deadlines for audio work, prioritizing tasks is crucial. Start by identifying the most time-sensitive elements and allocate your focus where it's needed most. I believe that the most important thing is to manage the client's expectations. I often use the "fast/cheap/good" triangle. You can pick any two, but you can't have all three. Clients might ask for a quick turnaround, but what they really want is a reliable answer as to what they should expect. If they want it in one day and you can do it in two days, I would say it will be done in three. If you get it done sooner, then great. If you get it done in the time quoted, then you kept your word. If they want to hold you to an impossible time frame, the most effective bargaining tool is the willingness to pass. Never compromise your standards out of fear; it will cost you in the end.

Focus is undervalued. I try to work for longer periods without interruption, but reward myself by indulging on the breaks with fancy food I wouldn't normally go for. Combine similar functioning tasks, especially in the area of preproduction. Start work a little late, but work really late, and sleep a little too little.

I feel regenerated by being outside; I need the "ear drain" while mixing/mastering. I like to go on walks for brain breaks and make sure to find silence. I prioritize a generalized to do list; get everything in the trailer or soundtrack or individual track to 80% completion so that I can ship if absolutely necessary. This generalized focus prevents me from getting caught in the trap where I'm redoing a solo endlessly, or searching for a better synth for hours. Then, if I have time left, I can "perfect" as long as I desire to achieve that special tingle, where I KNOW the music hits the right soul spot.

I outsource. I can't do it all if a client is coming directly to me for finished audio. Record my VO, send it to my engineer and ship it off to the client. Outsourcing and not trying to "do it all" as a sole, freelance talent is key.

The bigger and better the sizes of your processors, the faster and better your workflow. Hence it's totally advisable to have a better and fastest running pc or systems that can run your DAWs, and effects plugins without crashing in the middle of your recordings or mixes.

Learning how to use the free tools at your disposal instead of scrolling paid plugins online for hours is a good idea. Get good at simple. I’ve probably wasted days doing that.

Let’s define “ fast audio work” For example if it’s mixing one 4 minute song of multi- track recording material, depending on the recording material, how many tracks … are there over dubs … is any editing needed ? You’d also want to understand what the process of transferring the tracks into your DAW ( is it a file from the same software you use )or would you need to bring the tracks into a session using a different DAW than the recording? Sample rate and bit resolution of the tracks and what the deliverable sample rate and bit resolution needs to be ? What the end product is ? If there’s video involved or it’s just a straight stereo music mix … never send a “rough mix” there’s no such thing, make sure you feel that it’s a final mix!

You tell them faster doesn't equal better. Find out why it has to be such a quick turnaround. Did they have to fire someone and now they're in trouble if they don't stick to their original timing? Have they just left it to the last minute and suddenly realised they need to get this done? If the former and it's a good opportunity to make a high level connect that will be in your debt then go hells bells for it and charge them appropriately. If the latter, then I'd be a little wary of taking it on, as they'll be the ones who constantly do this kind of thing and you don't need their stress in your life. Other work will come in. Unless you can charge them a stupid rate for messing you about then it's just not worth it.

I tend to do my best work when the office/home is abandoned, and the distractions with it. After prioritising my workload, I give myself some creative free-space to come up with novel ideas and possible fresh approaches, which I then execute according to th eorder of importance...
