4 Not managing the dynamics

6 Not developing yourself

A sixth mistake you can make as a facilitator is not developing yourself as a facilitator. Without development, you risk stagnating, repeating, and losing relevance. You should also join networks, communities, and associations of facilitators, and exchange ideas, experiences, and feedback. Not paying attention to how you're showing up, and what emotions, thoughts and energies you're bringing into the session. You want to be as clear as possible to create and hold an open, safe space for your participants to get the best results. The quickest and most effective way to do this: Before you run a session, take 3-5 minutes to do a meditation, mindfulness or grounding practice. You can even run this as with your participants at the start of your session.

Preparing too much ?? You can put too many mental road blocks in your own way by spending too much time with notes, computers, program schedules, minor details that may or may not matter when you’re going live. Be aware of what helps you be present, explore that sense of being in the moment and how you help yourself get there.

Do not use the opening of the meeting to give opinions on individuals’ choice of delegates, participation or non-participation or call out issues. Use the opening of the meeting to summarise why the participants are there, the goal for the close of the meeting, how long the meeting will last, and how related topics and conflicts will be managed during the meeting. If the required approvers are not attending the meeting or are frequently late or unprepared, you can respectfully proceed or stop the meeting. Do not hold the participants who did show up as an audience for your criticism.
