You're faced with stakeholders holding opposing views. How do you navigate presenting to them effectively?

Views are rarely opposing, more often, they're merely different angles. Being open to feedback and actually listen helps. Being empathetic works wonders. Why does someone have a particular view?

Today, a software bug triggered by a faulty update from a US company has caused global chaos. Media, telecommunications, air traffic, gas stations, and banks were affected, including airports in Hamburg and Berlin. Even hospitals had to cancel surgeries.

Opposing views can be mitigated by understanding and sharing the multiple points of views prior to a meeting with individual stakeholders. This presents a recognizable storyline to discuss, where all views and pro's and con's are not a surprise. But can be discussed rationally. This avoids defensive positions of each stakeholder in a meeting, it creates and understanding and discussion of arguments with respect for each other. A meeting result can be arranged prior to a meeting, the meeting is just a formal confirmation. Cultural differences are important to consider ! Decision and meeting processes differ in Asian, French, German or Dutch companies for sure :). You will learn it the hard way quickly.

I would begin by understanding each stakeholder's perspective and then finding common ground. I would avoid bias and remain transparent, only presenting data and facts. I want to recognize and validate any concerns and acknowledge those concerns. I propose a solution that fits the mold from all angles and addresses each concern. Ultimately, I want to present a solution that mutually benefits all. I encourage open dialogue and act as a mediator to keep all parties focused and engage in a productive conversation. I would also schedule post-meeting follow-ups to address reservations or lingering concerns. Ongoing communication is also crucial to maintain a clear line of sight.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of our digital infrastructure. It presents an opportunity to strengthen our technological resilience by adopting a balanced approach that leverages the strengths of leading cloud solutions while ensuring independence and security.

In my experience, it is very hard to stay neutral when presenting opposing viewpoints. Even when you don't intend to, you always subconsciously end up favoring your side and this is conveyed to your audience. Furthermore, when you are passionate about one side, then your presentation of it becomes more engaging to your audience. So, I am a huge advocate of having a specific viewpoint when presenting because it gives you edge and passion. And I don't see why this can't spark productive dialogue. You just need to be open-minded and ready to hear other views, and possibly admit that you are wrong if you are.

Highlighting our goal as well as our shared values is something that should be done when beginning as well as when ending the presentation. You need to be able to support your viewpoint but also say why it aligns with these values. So, even if someone holds an opposing point; knowing that your way serves the shared purpose, makes you and your way more accepted by your audience.

Use them to better understand not only what the gaps are but also how to bridge them. Collect insights and hints, understand how to build a relationship, joined ground, and agreements that will enable you to convince or be confident in solving the challenges and disagreements you face.

Engagement is very valuable when presenting. Asking questions that facilitate dialogue should be incorporated during but also after the presentation. But before you ask anything you need to make sure that everyone feels their voices are valued and heard. Your personality that was showcased during the presentation or the introduction of yourself can really make the audience feel safe and that you are ready to hear what they have to say.

These opposing views, when reconciled, contribute positively to the organization's overall progress, ensuring that the collective efforts move in a singular, strong direction.

Passion is key in presentations. You need to be passionate about what you present, and if you are not, you can fake it. Passion makes the presentation more engaging and from my experience, your audience is more likely to believe in your viewpoint if you show them why you are passionate about it.

Use techniques like the 'World Café' method, where small groups rotate discussions, allowing each participant to contribute and hear different viewpoints in a relaxed setting. Then, use a 'Dot Voting' system to prioritize the most critical issues and potential solutions. This collaborative approach fosters understanding, highlights common ground, and helps build a consensus that respects diverse opinions. This method not only resolves conflicts but also strengthens stakeholder relationships and project outcomes.
