I've found that where I need to give feedback for growth and improvement, that planning the conversation in detail helps. Although it may not go as you plan, really considering how the person will react to the points you make and honing your words to suit, really helps. I also like to consider their responses and how best to handle those. Finally, I'm always mindful to only raise one or at most two improvement areas in any one conversation. It's better to focus on improving one area, than to overwhelm and demotivate an employee with several areas for development. In summary, I take a careful, step by step approach

The key is in the conditioning. First establish a relationship to strengthen trust. It isn't fair to expect someone will openly accept feedback from just anyone. You need to be someone. Half the part is the art of giving feedback. But if the first two are skipped then the second part (receiving feedback) might not align.

When providing feedback to a sensitive team member, it’s important to approach the conversation with empathy and understanding. Start by creating a safe and private setting where the team member feels comfortable. Use specific and constructive language that focuses on the behavior or outcome, rather than personal attributes, to avoid triggering defensiveness. Begin with positive observations and gently transition to areas that need improvement, clearly explaining the impact and offering support for development. Encourage an open dialogue, allowing them to share their perspective, and reinforce their strengths to build confidence. This approach not only encourages growth but also strengthens the trust & mutual respect for effective teamwork.
