At first it may seem intimidating but there are several techniques and strategies to adopt. Learn some basics, even a few words. In our time, there are a multitude of applications as well. See prepare key phrases to have them at hand. Using gestures can also help when communicating. If possible have a language tandem. The most important thing in the end is to be patient with yourself and others

This might be a hot take, but I don't think that opening a translation app should be your knee-jerk response when faced with language barriers on a tour. While translation apps can absolutely provide a translation that is actionable (if not perfect), using one immediately turns this incredibly human interaction into an impersonal transaction. Before your trip, put in a little effort to learn a few words of the local language for your trip. Challenge yourself to remain outside your comfort zone while you are traveling, you may be surprised by your communication skills.
