If it's a foul overcast day and you want to make it look like a bright sunny day add CTO gel to your flash head. This will turn your subject orange, BUT when you expose for tungsten it will expose the subject correctly and turn the overcast sky bright blue. It's a neat little trick that can work wonders when it comes to transforming a dull lifeless exterior into something bright and poppy. *Note you will have to selectively pull out a little bit of red saturation from the subject and adjust the color balance slightly to make it all harmonize and come together.*

Many years ago, I coined a simple phrase: "Available light is no longer available", as I got used very early in my career to explore creative ways to handle a mix of artificial light and natural light, with the mix depending more on the type of photography and the concept associated with the campaign than the weather itself, as I took control of the lighting of my photoshoots, regardless of the available light provided by the location. Conclusion: Never leave the studio without your own Sun! And if you do not have a grip on artificial lighting, then learn to do it! The current batch of strobes, portable LEDs and HMIs offer many alternatives to choose from, define your own style of lighting, and resolve any poor weather conditions.

Embrace the Mood: Use the gloomy atmosphere to your advantage. It can create a dramatic and moody aesthetic that adds depth to your images. Increase ISO: Raise the ISO setting on your camera to make the sensor more sensitive to light. Just be mindful of potential noise; find a balance that works for your camera. Widen Your Aperture: Use a larger aperture (smaller f-stop number) to let in more light. This can also create a pleasing shallow depth of field.

Use the overcast sky to your advantage. The diffused light softens shadows, making it perfect for moody, atmospheric shots like portraits or landscapes. Increase your ISO to allow more light in, but be cautious to avoid noise. Use a slower shutter speed to capture more light and a wider aperture to let in more light. Use a tripod with lower light, slower shutter speeds to capture enough light without overexposing the image.
