It’s not easy to deal with conflicting comm. styles. Active listening will definitely help. Open dialogue may not always be possible or reciprocated by others. The other person may sometime speak directly and sometime indirectly, so you can’t really adapt a particular style. I feel the way to deal should be on a case to case basis. Try to gauge the underlying message, corresponding circumstances, ask questions if not clear, ignore white noise, focus on why ‘the message’ is communicated and what action is expected out of ‘the message’ and double check if not clear with the person, where possible.

To handle conflicting communication styles begins with attentive listening. It's essential to comprehend the other person's viewpoint before replying. Once I understand their style, modify my approach to accommodate them. For example, if they prefer straightforwardness, be clear and brief; if they appreciate empathy, demonstrate understanding and compassion. Addressing misunderstandings promptly can help avoid additional conflicts. Finally, staying patient and open encourages a more effective dialogue.

There are some tests available that you can take to identify your comms style and get some key points to identify others, this will help you to try to accommodate your message to other prefer style and to understand when someone has a different comms style than yours. If you’re leading a team or are part of one you can suggest a dynamic where all take the test and explain their preferred comms style so you all can communicate better.
