You're faced with a client's request to bypass security measures. How do you navigate this risky situation?

In such a scenarios, sticks to what is rightful and much needed as per the environment and required compliances & standards to be adhered by the Customer. Educate the customer about possible consequences and talk about past security incidents and penalties levied in similar cases of bypassing the security controls.

Document all communications related to the client's request, including discussions, decisions, and outcomes. Escalate the issue in case of significant security risks/ethical concerns. Clearly communicate your commitment to upholding security standards and ethical practices to set boundaries on what security measures can be bypassed and under what circumstances. Involve key stakeholders including senior management, security teams, and compliance officers in the decision-making process. Work collaboratively with the client to find common ground and align on solutions that balance security requirements with business needs. Consult with legal counsel to understand the legal and regulatory implications of bypass to avoid legal consequences.

Begin by explaining to the client why bypassing security measures is not an option. Emphasize the ethical responsibility you have to protect their data, the data of others, and the integrity of the network. Highlight that security measures are in place to prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, and potential damage to the client’s reputation and finances. Bypassing these measures not only compromises security but could also lead to severe consequences for both the client and your organization.

Bypassing security controls is a must NO. At the same time, not all security controls are applicable for all considering size, scale and complexity of the given environment. Hence, customer education and thorough assessment of control's applicability must be ascertained and accordingly security controls can be bypassed by documenting the Risk & possible mitigation measures in the Risk Register with due approval from top level management and stakeholders.

Bypassing security risks may result in security incidents including but not limited to comprised network, data theft, exposed secrets, key, certificates, password, etc. There could be legal aur statutory guidelines violations also. Hence, customer education by taking references from incidents that occurred in the past in the same scenarios is crucial here. Any possible deviation from standards and needed security measures must be documented and approved properly.

Client education is very important here and can really make the difference. Sometimes a Customer focusing more on saving CAPEX/OPEX and reducing administrative overhead may request for ignoring some of the security controls. As a true consultant and security professionals, it is our responsibility to educate the Customer about possible consequences and clarify all their doubts and provide the right measures and solutions.

Sometimes you have to say NO to a Customer because you had experienced consequences of bypassing the security controls & truly care for your Customers and don't want the Customer to go through them. Hence, saying NO accompanied with through explanation is the trick here. At no point in time, loose your professional integrity.
