My first question would be “how ineffective do you want us to be.” Secondly, I’d have a candid discussion about what campaign elements would need to be eliminated to accommodate budget constraints.
-
My first question is whether increasing the budget is an option. If it is, great—it’s good to have that flexibility. However, since that’s rarely the case, and even if it is, the next step is to understand why they’re asking for these changes. What’s the underlying goal or outcome they’re hoping to achieve? Once we have clarity on that, we can explore ways to reach the same result within the existing budget. It’s about finding the most efficient path to the destination using the resources we have. By keeping communication open, aligning expectations, and enfranchising the client in decisions about creative alternatives, we can deliver a solution that meets their needs without breakage—and often exceeds expectations.

Flip the conversation. Reframe the revisions as opportunities to maximize impact, not just add costs. Explain the value and trade-offs clearly: "To achieve X, we need Y." Offer tiered solutions—good, better, best—that respect the budget while highlighting the benefits of investing more. If necessary, challenge their vision: “Does this change elevate the goal or just complicate the process?” Stand firm on value, not cost. A great idea doesn’t need an unlimited budget—just the right focus.

Faced with budget-breaking revisions from a client, my approach involves strategic negotiation to find a win-win solution. First, I'd clearly outline the additional costs and time implications of the requested revisions. Then, I'd present alternative solutions that achieve their goals within the original budget, highlighting any compromises needed. Open and honest communication is key—by discussing the project's scope and priorities, we can agree on adjustments that satisfy the client's needs while maintaining budget constraints. This collaborative approach ensures the client's vision is met without derailing the project.
