Before you start looking for a mentee, you need to clarify why you want to be a mentor and what you hope to achieve. Do you want to help someone advance their career, develop new competencies, or overcome a challenge? Do you want to give back to your field, expand your network, or enhance your own skills? Your purpose will guide your search and help you communicate your value proposition to potential mentees.

Their level of experience doesn't matter to me. They could be just starting or a little further into the game (but as a mentor, I was at that stage at some point too). I do, however, base my search and ideals on ambition, will, and their written down goals and targets. You want to start here and finish there, but if you didn’t have a mentor as an option, how were you going to attempt to get there? You would hope that you can have connecting or complimentary personalities, but that isn’t always the case. You need people who are willing to fail, take on feedback and try new things.

There are many ways to connect with potential mentees, such as online platforms, professional associations, alumni networks, or internal programs. You can also ask for referrals from your colleagues, friends, or existing mentees. When you explore your options, keep an open mind and be flexible.
