This provides them not only with an initial connection within the company but can also speed up the onboarding process (if their guide works in the same department). Once you've formed a connection with them as an experienced employee, you can act as a mentor during their first few months with the company.

As an experienced employee helping new hires acclimate to the company culture is crucial. Nprmally I would start by creating a warm welcome sharing insights about company values, and offering assistance. Providing regular feedback and support are essential during the employee initial weeks, I would involve them in social activities, appoint a buddy, and certainly invest in structured onboarding programs. I would also consider organizing company retreats or team-building events to contribute to their comfort, engagement, and alignment with the company’s culture.

To help a new person feel good at work, just be friendly and nice. Show them around, introduce them to everyone, and make them feel comfortable. Teach them how things work and answer any questions they have. Also, be their friend and listen when they talk. Include them in team stuff, help them out, and be there for them if they need anything. Tell them stories about the fun things we do at work and what we believe in as a company. This can help them feel motivated and part of the team, it might take them a while to get used to everything, so be patient and supportive.

To provide effective feedback and support, be specific, timely, and constructive. Listen actively, acknowledge achievements, and offer guidance for improvement. Create a supportive environment where employees feel comfortable expressing concerns. Regular check-ins and open communication channels are key for ongoing feedback and support.

To involve new hires in social activities, invite them to team lunches, after-work events, and virtual coffee chats. Encourage participation in team-building activities and group projects. Provide opportunities for informal interactions to build relationships and integrate them into the company culture.

For HR Professionals, to support this initiative in your organization, look into to starting a "buddy program." Pulse the organization to get commitment and feedback but also to see who would be interested in being a buddy. The path I am starting on in my organization is during my new hire check-ins, I am asking them "who has been the most helpful during your time here?" This helps me gauge who is a good overall "buddy" for the program and who is a good "buddy" for certain roles or departments!

So often we forget that orientation and onboarding are two totally different things. Being cognizant that the onboarding and orientation phases can be separated by up 6 months & may struggle with their new role getting acclimated to the culture surrounding them. In previous roles, I always made it a point to interview my mentors and mentees so that I could pair people up who had some of the same likes and hobbies. It's my belief, the people who enjoy the same things are going to have less breakdown in communication, & thrive during the onboarding process. I want more then a new employee that shows up works their shift and goes home. I want to create an environment that people enjoy coming to work while building the stage for future mentors.
