In my view evaluating a candidate's weaknesses can be challenging, especially when trying to balance empathy and assertiveness. I try to begin by highlighting the candidate's strengths to build their confidence and set a positive tone. Maintaining open dialogue by having an open discussion also helps. At the end of the day make them understand that a healthy balance of praise and constructive criticism is important in personal growth. Being clear, specific and constructive helps have such conversations, identify areas for improvement and how to address them.

It’s important to be truthful about a candidate’s shortcomings without sugar-coating or being overly lenient. However, your tone should remain kind and supportive throughout the conversation. Example: I want to be honest with you—right now, your ability to delegate tasks seems like an area where you’re struggling. It’s something that can be worked on with practice and guidance, but I believe improving it will help you lead more effectively.

Balancing empathy and assertiveness is key when giving feedback. I find starting with strengths helps set a positive tone, and then offering specific, constructive feedback gives the candidate clear steps to improve. Keeping the conversation open for questions also shows you're invested in their growth.

When evaluating a candidate's weaknesses, I’ll start by being empathetic and acknowledging their feelings. I’ll ask questions to understand their challenges better and show that I care. At the same time, I’ll be assertive by clearly discussing the areas they need to improve. This way, I can help them see their weaknesses as opportunities for growth while providing honest feedback.

1st thing to keep in mind is that you are talking to a person, more often than not a fellow adult so the conversation should always be respectful. Your feedback should be professional and direct clearly addressing the areas they need to improve. Frame your feedback an opportunity for growth and where possible share tools and resources to help the candidate improve
