You’re an environmental consultant. How can you be sure you’re using the most efficient tools?

I believe in a case like an environmental consultant, there is no one tool fit all like it can be in some extend for other areas of consulting. Depending of the size of the client and industry, if we take carbon footprint as an example here, you will not advice the same tool for 2 companies in 2 different industries.

In Hong Kong, specific requirements and expectations of clients usually refer to the ordinances/regulations/codes of practices, General Specifications of Contract (if it is a government project) and Particular Specifications of this project. In case some certifications, such as LEED, WELL and BEAM Plus, are required and be a part of this project, corresponding requirements shall also apply. Specific requirements of materials, products and systems are usually stated in the above documents. Contractors and suppliers should provide pre-approved equipment, which are in compliance with such requirements. Otherwise it may be considered as a breach of contract.

Se nos pueden ocurrir ideas brillantes para promocionar productos y servicios, pero sin atender a los requisitos obligatorios podemos quedar en situaciones complejas donde los clientes están declarando propiedades de sus productos o servicios que no se corresponden con la realidad ambiental de los mismos. Así es común que algunas organizaciones no estén al corriente de requisitos legales, incumplan normativa sobre sustancias o vertidos contaminantes o que carezcan de algunos permisos o licencias que deberíamos ser capaces de identificar y tramitar para evitar esos incumplimientos.

To do this, you can use online platforms, reviews, and forums to find out what other environmental consultants are using and recommending. Additionally, consulting with your peers, mentors, and industry associations can provide valuable insights and feedback. Common tools used by environmental consultants include geographic information systems (GIS) for spatial analysis, environmental data management systems (EDMS) for collecting and storing data, environmental modeling software for predicting impacts, environmental auditing tools for assessing compliance, and environmental communication tools for engaging stakeholders.

In my experience, tools are more important because they vary from one place to another. Things like language, traditions, regions and society in general might nit fancy the tools used. You have to find the right person, the right words to ensure that you do no compromise the research

El cambio climático, la economía circular y la sostenibilidad como nueva variable sociológica están revolucionando a marchas forzadas el contexto económico, político, social y normativo a nivel global. En un ambiente tan cambiante es imprescindible estar al día de todas las novedades y noticias que van surgiendo a diario sobre temas relacionados con el medio ambiente. Instituciones públicas, grandes empresas, asociaciones gremiales y ciudadanas que publican estudios, investigaciones, informes, herramientas, normas, opiniones a favor y en contra de decisiones de terceros, son una fuente fundamental de información que los consultores ambientales deben analizar para firmar su propio juicio crítico al respecto.

Acá entra en juego las normas, índices, indicadores, que nos dan la pauta del mejor uso y uso de cada una de las herramientas utilizadas. Las que tienen que ser medibles

La consultoría ambiental tiene que ofrecer servicios orientados al cliente, buscando optimizar sus resultados, pero atendiendo especialmente a los impactos ambientales. No resulta sencillo conciliar los intereses económicos con los resultados ecológicos, pero hay requisitos mínimos imprescindibles que es importante no perder de vista. En primer lugar el cumplimiento de la legislación ambiental. No son pocas las organizaciones que desconocen los requisitos obligatorios que deberían aplicar a su actividad. También son muchas las que carecen de algunos de los permisos o licencias que requieren para operar. Partiendo de ese mínimo podemos empezar a plantear otras cuestiones más sofisticadas, pero lo importante es establecer una buena base.
