A mentor holds the ladder of success still for the person behind them to get on. So much of experience comes from reflecting on setbacks and successes and a mentor can play a crucial role in setting out what roadblocks and bumps in the road might lay ahead for someone with less experience. This can then help someone short cut the route to success by avoiding mistakes and modelling the successes of the mentor. A mentor can also see connections the mentee cannot, as when you are starting on your journey you don't know what you don't know or where to even start looking. In that situation, a mentor can be vital in connecting people and opportunities more quickly than if the mentee was left to do it themself.

A starting point when looking to find a mentor is to understand clearly what experience you want the mentor to have that you don't. It may be that you need to understand business finances in more detail, so identifying someone with that skill set makes finding a mentor easier. Having clarity also makes asking someone for help easier, as they can understand clearly what you need from them. This provides a structure to the relationship which in turn makes setting goals easier too. Once you know what support you need, turn to your existing network. Does that support exist within that or if not, does that network know someone in their network they could introduce you to?

Approaching a mentor starts with being really clear what you are asking of them and at the forefront of respecting someone's time. Humility is vital when approaching a mentor as you are indicating you do not have the current experience, skill set you need. This humility needs to be authentic. Although at first glance mentoring can appear to the transactional by definition, in my experience approaching mentoring that way is incorrect. The best mentoring relationships I have are based on a deep long term relationship where both parties get value from the time they spend together. If the relationship is transactional, set clear goals and parameters so both parties understand their roles clearly.
