You're an Educational Leadership professional. What's the next step in your career path?

In my perspective, academic leaderships are poorly managed in terms of selection, development and outplacement. First, institutions must understand that an excellent researcher is not necessarily an excellent manager/leader. Competencies must be objectively assessed/developed. Second, leaders need support in advanced aspects of management, strategy, governance and culture to reach outstanding results. Regarding the career sequence, universities and their leaders must be seen as central elements of the development of nations. Given that they have experience as senior executives and, at the same time, exposure to frontier science, they should contribute to public and business policies for innovation, competitiveness and quality of life.

Setting personal goals for leadership and developing leadership skills are aligned. Both require action, passion, purpose, self belief and strategic reflective practice. Observe others impact, listen to those leaders you respect and be aware of your own biases. Be open to change, be flexible but above all be ready to redirect your actions and apologize to your team when goals need to change. Know that education policies and goals set by government authorities need to be at the forefront of assessing goals too. Finally, be authentic, visionary and inclusive with how you assess goals for yourself and others. Together Everyone Achieves More!

When you are thinking about your next professional chapter, it is always good to take a moment and assess your list or vision of personal and professional goals. Evaluate them to see if you are on track to accomplishing them, checking them off of your bucket list or even if you want to pivot in the career landscape. Your skills can be transferable to other industries that can utilize your talent. Don’t be afraid to accomplish the goals and dreams that you have for yourself! Bet on you!

Ultimately, my goal is to continue growing as a leader and making a meaningful impact on the field of education. always i am trying to be a leader.

Do you want to be a Principal, CEO, Assistant Head, Inspector or something else? What is your timeline for achieving this and how could you develop yourself to get there? How impactful have you been in your current role and how can you measure this? All of the above will help you plan your next career steps. In my case I know I want to be a school Principal within the next 8 years. To achieve my goal I have a plan which includes impact at work, reading material, networking and PD.

Firstly, I plan to enroll in specialized professional development courses on emerging educational technologies and leadership strategies. This will not only refine my current skill set but also equip me with innovative tools to drive educational excellence. Additionally, I aim to increase my involvement in educational conferences, which will provide valuable networking opportunities and insights into global educational trends. Seeking out mentorship from distinguished leaders can offer new perspectives and strategies for effective leadership. Furthermore, I intend to contribute scholarly articles to reputable educational journals to share my insights and research findings.

In my experience working in an education as a leader is a very challenging role. You have to be a specialist in so many areas apart from learning and teaching. Some of the skills you need are HR, PR, sales and marketing, finance, negotiation and conflict resolution, coaching and mentoring. With these skills other career options are available to you. Working in schools is fabulous but skills are transferable.

Exploring options allows leaders to gather diverse perspectives, insights, and information from different sources, including research, experts, peers, and stakeholders. This broadens their understanding of issues and opportunities, enabling them to make well-informed choices that align with the needs and priorities of their educational settings. Exploring options fosters creativity, curiosity, and adaptability in leaders, encouraging them to think outside the box and embrace new ideas and perspectives. It empowers leaders to experiment with different approaches, take calculated risks, and learn from both successes and failures.

Where can you go and what can you do? Is there scope for promotion within the current organisation you are working in or will you have to move to achieve your goals? Do you have the relevant qualifications already or is there a need to "go back to school"? I would advise talking to people in your network, get different perspectives and advise about how to get where you want to go. Whatever your goal is don't give up on getting there.

Educational leadership lends itself to many pathways, depending on your interest. It is one of the professions that can help you diversify easily. We have all had a taste of HR, PD, evaluations and appraisals, admissions and outreach, students and alumni affairs, curriculum, academics, events and programmes. Take your pick!

To succeed in higher education leadership, it is vital to learn from those who have traversed different career paths before us. Networking and engaging with professionals through academic associations, conferences, workshops, webinars, blogs, and social media provide invaluable knowledge and experience. Seeking informational interviews, mentoring, and shadowing opportunities helps us gain insights, advice, and referrals. This collaborative approach broadens our understanding and fosters a supportive community, guiding us towards our ultimate career goals.

Networking is crucial in the field of Educational Leadership as it provides opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and professional development. Building a strong network allows leaders to learn from the experiences of others, stay informed about current trends and best practices, and access resources and support. Networking also facilitates partnerships with other schools, organizations, and stakeholders, enabling leaders to create positive change and improve outcomes for students.

Having achieved your goal as an educational leader, networking and continued learning is the next step. Networking is important to understanding what your peers in the field are doing and strengthening your philosophy around the type of leader you want to be. Networking is also crucial to building supportive relationships and partnerships, and to expand opportunities to demonstrate your talents. Continued learning, and maintaining a stance of curiosity, are necessary to become effective and remain relevant as an educational leader.

When you network you obviously want to gain benefits from your network. This however, is where most people start and stop. Problem-solving for other people is key to developing and strong network. You have to tune your listening to hear what problems they are trying to solve. You listen to what they DO say and what they DON’T say. Strong relationships that occur from helping others solve problems will strengthen your own network, and you will actually gain more benefits in the long run. First seek to help, then you will be helped. The difficult or urgent issues you face in the future will have to contend with a stronger network of people who will be willing to provide the coaching, insight, contacts, and possible resources you need.

Networking is always used as a buzz word - and often done very unauthentically. Done from the heart and it can open doors into yourself and into ancient wisdoms of emotional intelligence that can help you navigate and thrive in your journey. Collaboration began as early as caveman - when he would hunt in a herd. Thus follow your instincts and listen with all your senses when you speak with a co-professional.

Continual learning is essential for Educational Leadership professionals to stay current with research, policies, and innovations in education. Engaging in ongoing professional development through conferences, workshops, seminars, and online courses helps leaders enhance their skills and knowledge, adapt to changes in the field, and address emerging challenges effectively. By investing in networking and learning opportunities, Educational Leadership professionals can advance their careers and make a meaningful impact on education.

The first step to learning is acknowledging the need for more expertise in a specific field or topic. However, as simple as the previous statement could sound, finding the proper gap in our understanding is a highly reflexive task. These gaps must solve a precise and concrete problem or risk in the development of the professional career and do not only serve as a pursuit of personal growth. Taking into account the prior paragraph, the responsibility of strength social relations which boost and frame our learning path became a crucial part of keeping an updated skillset.

The first step in planning your career path is to assess your personal and professional goals. This introspective process starts with understanding what truly drives you. Ask yourself: What are you passionate about? Identifying your passions can illuminate potential career paths that will keep you motivated and fulfilled.

The leaders that schools want to hire are the ones that can demonstrate impact. What have you achieved and how can you evidence this? It may be that you need to update your CV to highlight your successes and your skills or it could be your online profile needs to be revamped to highlight all of your skills and achievements. If you are able to focus on all the amazing things you have done then your next career move is just around the corner.

Showcasing achievements is essential for Educational Leadership professionals to demonstrate their effectiveness and impact. It allows leaders to highlight successful initiatives, innovations, and improvements they have implemented within their educational settings. By sharing achievements with stakeholders, including staff, students, parents, and the wider community, leaders can build trust, confidence, and support. Showcasing achievements also serves as a form of recognition and motivation for staff, acknowledging their hard work and contributions to the success of the organisation. It can inspire others to strive for excellence and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Oh yes show off! All the quirky things you have done and the lone certificate that stands out as the sore thumb among your other 'educational' achievements. Because that is what makes you who you are, or rather , really shows how versatile and unique you are. There re many who have the regular milestones under their belt - what makes your combination unique and a rare find?

I’m reminded of an excerpt from Marianne Williamson’s poem - when we shine our light we give permission for others to shine theirs! Be authentically intentional as well as a model for others to follow. Acknowledge the ideas of others you may have borrowed as a catalyst for making things greater! Know when other schools start following your lead, you are definitely doing something right! Accolades, certificates and praise are a bonus which I am grateful for, but always remember to acknowledge and celebrate with those who supported making that greatness happen too!

Taking action is crucial for Educational Leadership professionals to translate ideas and plans into tangible results and meaningful outcomes. It involves making strategic decisions, setting goals, and implementing initiatives to drive positive change and improve educational experiences for students, staff, and stakeholders. Taking action also fosters a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within educational institutions. It encourages leaders to experiment with new approaches, learn from experiences, and adapt strategies based on feedback and evidence. This iterative process of action and reflection enables leaders to refine their practices and achieve better outcomes over time.

Taking action can often be a case of taking a deep breath and just doing it. It is easy to let time get away from you in the school environment, but every person you engage with or event that you take part in, brings its own learning and own rewards.

You don't need to take BIG action. Start with micro actions over time. Identify small scale projects opportunities like speaking at a conference, writing an article, or offering your services for thought partnership. Create small new opportunities in your current position to expand your impact by addressing an existing gap. Leverage your skills, expertise, and intellectual property to serve and support others. In short, take baby steps - one foot in front of the other.

Se former, sans cesse. Communiquer, en permanence. Motiver, à longueur de temps. Bouger les lignes, constamment. Oser, toujours. Bref. Toujours chercher à aller de l'avant ??

Think outside the box. Every sector requires educators and leaders, so don’t be constrained to the usual, look for the unusual! Educators are skilled to work in any sector with people of all ages and stages of growth, so be brave and bold and remove the unconscious bias that you’ll probably be working towards…dream big and go do it!

At times educational leadership is monotonous. I feel one should look for more challenging projects to deal with and take the team to next level.

I’d consider 2 things that embody the core principle that great leaders create more leaders. 1) Codify your learnings and expertise into digestible, shareable content or workshops. Take what you’ve learned and provide access for others to learn from you. Share widely and broadly. 2) Formalize your expertise into fellowships, pipeline programs, or professional development series to increase engagement and effectiveness in those within your organization. And, you get practice with leading leaders and developing others.

Most of us spend so much time ensuring that our staff receives enough PD each year that we neglect ourselves. Find your routine, the right mix of things that allows you to remain informed but that also allows you have 1% of a life! Whether you like podcasts, journals, case studies or maybe you want to get MA or Ph.D./Ed.D.?
