Feedback is good...if we can receive it. A big mistake that new leaders make (I did it too) is we have the tendency to ASKL for feedback and then argue when it comes. Feedback is only as valuable as it is received. This goes back to the advise I provided in the previous section, when I encouraged listening and asking good questions. Take advantage of the positive direction given by actually receiving the feedback provided.

One of the things that I have done to prepare leaders I am mentoring is encourage them to make, "I intend to..." statements. Instead of, "What should I do..." which completely eliminates the power of their own thought process, I encourage them to come to me with a fully thought-out proposition. If I feel something is missing, I can always share it. But the initiative of thinking through the situation, making a decision of what they feel is best and bringing the solution instead of the problem has propelled MANY leaders to radical success!

Volunteering for projects that push me out of my comfort zone showcases my eagerness to learn and grow as a leader. Sometimes, when we ar trying to learn from the boss, we have a tendency to try and hide our mistakes, so they won't be disappointed in us. DON'T DO THIS!!! First, OWN the mistake. (that generates respect) Second, seek feedback. (this converts it to a learning opportunity) Third, try again. (this facilitates growth!)

Don’t just read them , study them. In many cases they serve as blue prints for your companies execution style. (Ex: Lencioni is widely used here) Conferences that expand your knowledge base or deepen your understanding in your vertical also support your growth, and show your direct that you focus on evolving and are an appreciating asset. Your focus on continuous learning serves you, your family and your employer. If you want things to become better, you must become better. You are the variable.

Leaders can't lead if they don't understand and appreciate what team members do for the organization, daily and long-term. Sales can't succeed without the help of the customer service and marketing teams. Marketing can't dial in messaging without input from sales and CX team members. Understand who your team members are as individuals and team members, and use that knowledge to benefit the organization.
