You're eager to impress with your public speaking ideas. How can you get your boss on board?

My 3 ways for Impressing Your Boss On Public Speaking: 1. Make the pitch as simple as possible to understand. Bosses do not have alot of time to understand jargon. 2. Use visuals. 3. Show how it impacts the organization.

Start small. It's easier to prove that something works and then get more time and resources to keep doing it. For instance; asking your boss to go to one conference that will cover your expenses to try and prove the benefit is easier than asking them to make a complete career pivot. Make a small suggestion on how to get started. It's easier for them to say yes.

Use this as a guide to craft your presentation depending on the type of leader. Charismatic: Enthusiastic, risk-seeking, short attention span, needs results, facts support emotions, prefers simple communication. Thinker: Logical, data-driven, risk-averse, prefers balanced arguments and detailed methodology. Skeptic: Suspicious, disruptive, values credibility and trusted sources, challenges ideas. Follower: Risk-averse, relies on past decisions, prefers proven, low-risk innovations. Controller: Detail-oriented, analytical, hates ambiguity, prefers structured arguments, avoids accountability, takes time to decide. This will help you understand not what you want to say but what your boss needs to hear

Understand their priorities. Whether it's sales, innovation, or team growth, show how your public speaking ideas align with their goals. Demonstrating how your approach can benefit key areas will make it easier for them to see the value and support your ideas.

Your boss likely has more than one pain point. Pick the one you think you can solve by speaking publicly. For instance, maybe speaking to your peers won't increase sales - but maybe your boss's second biggest problem is recruitment. It's better to be genuine than trying to shoehorn in a solution to a problem.

Refer to my guide in section 1 on type of leaders. Depending on the type some want to see the end goal and ready to implement while others need you to give them time to mull it over before being ready to hear you out.

Show rather than tell. It's always more effective to do something and demonstrate value rather than demonstrating in theory. If you are willing, invest your own time first, and use that to show value. Or ask your boss for something small enough that they won't feel the need to say no - use that small thing to demonstrate value.

Keep your boss in the loop with updates. Sometimes it's tricky to get speaking engagements but let them know how many abstracts you've sent out, where, and what you think the benefit is. Keep them engaged in the journey. This way they can share in the joy once you get a talk accepted and they will know how much work you put in. Updates can be done in one-on-ones or simple check-in e-mails.
