I have found that an opportunistic "dot connecting" approach works well. For example, as a new Geology undergraduate at the University of California at Santa Barbara, Shell offered a field internship. The opportunity was not published and a bit grant fossicking was necessary. I asked an advisor if he was aware of any grant opportunities. Next, I asked around for coming field work and learned of some field-based paleomagnetism work planned by two graduate students. The field work consisted of sample collection using a field drill along the beaches & jungle rivers of Borneo and lots of mule work, i.e., sample packing. I was looking for new field experience, new territory, new culture with new geos. Sitting down with Iban Headhunters a bonus.

Raised in the Mother Lode of California, I set my sights on structural geology by 3rd Grade. The Empire Mine Museum in my home town of Grass Valley has a physical wire frame of underground workings, describing plate boundary thrust faults. Through my entire education I looked for mentors to level up. It was my good fortune to choose U.C. Santa Barbara where a particular Kiwi Structural Geologist was working on the same structurally-hosted gold deposits that I grew up over. He pointed me to New Zealand, where I would accept a postdoc on the Alpine fault 10 yrs later, having completed Precambrian structure MS and PhDs in Grand Canyon. All of these experiences are with me in my current role, though I have had to veer and steer along the way.

With regards to mentorship access, I have always looked at this relationship as a two-way value proposition. One of my most powerful professional (and personal) mantras is, "make it hard to say no". This is a very important mantra in attracting mentors as it implies we must do enough detective work prior to, or during initial conversations with our prospective mentor to understand their value system and how we might identify value that you can offer them.
