As a human rights lawyer, I recognize that I am susceptible to compassion fatigue due to emotional support requests from clients. To maintain balance I; a) Set boundaries during the first engagement with a client, including helping the client understand what I/institution can/cannot offer. I then take up assignments that I can handle and detach from those that are out of my control. b) Maintain a referral pathway with institutions that offer other services e.g. counseling, social services and refer clients to them. From experience, working alongside other professionals can help temper clients emotions. c) Undertake regular debriefing sessions and maintain healthy work life balance. NB- Deliberate effort is needed to maintain balance.

Here's how I can support them without losing myself in the process. While empathy is key but boundaries are essential for balance when clients heavily on emotional support. I make it a point to actively listen, validate their feelings, and provide actionable guidance, rather than getting pulled into their emotions. Scheduling time specifically for these conversations also helps. → I give them my full presence in those moments, but once it’s done, I refocus on my own priorities and well-being. → Staying grounded with routines outside work—exercise, time with friends, or even just a quiet walk—allows me to recharge. This way, I can support them without losing myself in the process.
