2 Modify the appearance

The second step in creating a convincing weapon is to modify its appearance. Depending on the type of weapon, you may need to paint it, distress it, or add details. For example, you can use spray paint, acrylic paint, or markers to change the color and texture of a plastic gun to make it look like metal. Sandpaper, files, hammers, or other tools can be used to create scratches, dents, or cracks on wooden or metal weapons. Glue, tape, wire, and other materials can be used to add accessories such as scopes and magazines to guns and hilts and sheaths to swords. You can also use fire, water, chemicals, stickers, decals and labels to create aging effects or add logos and symbols.

3 Use them effectively

The third step in a successful performance is to use your weapons effectively on stage. You have to consider the choreography, the lighting, the sound, and the audience's perspective of your weapons. When it comes to choreography, you must rehearse and practice with a fight director, as well as coordinate the timing, distance, and angle of your weapon actions. Lighting should be adjusted to create the right mood, atmosphere, and visibility. Additionally, sound must be synchronized with your actions and music. It’s important to use sound effects such as clicks, bangs, or slashes to create an illusion of weapons. Dialogue, screams, or grunts should be used to convey emotion and impact. Lastly, you must think about the audience's perception and expectation of your weapons; you must balance realism and theatricality while respecting their sensitivity and intelligence.
