You're in a Direct Sales career and you're facing rejection. What can you do to turn things around?

Change your mindset about rejection. Stop thinking that it's personal. It usually isn't. It's business. If people reject your outreach it's because they are busy or not in need. They are telling you something they are not rejecting you or even your company or product. They simply aren't interested. Put yourself in a position to talk to more people who will be interested remembering that not everyone will buy right now. Prove to yourself that there are plenty of people out there that have interest and want to have conversations. Help them, that is a win whether they buy or not.

Rejection is constant. Depending on the role you have successfully rates are anywhere from 20% to 0.1%. Cold calling is a horrendous strain on the mind and mindset. Rejection shouldn't get you down. If you're decent enough at sales then noone will sell to those people. Every call you can learn something from. Even ask why they said no. People find it very appealing if a sales person actually asks for feedback.

Embrace it. Sales is like baseball - the success rate is naturally going to be in that 20-40% range. I’d rather get rejected by a prospect now versus read between the lines 6 months from now. Fail fast, keep the relationship and circle back in a few months.

The key is to respond and not react, to that rejection. Understand that if your approach isn’t all about them - you need to level up and change that. People are busy and used to avoiding sales calls, so you need to stay positive, understand what value your product or service can bring to them, and be “real” and able to quickly communicate that. If it’s not for them, be gracious about it and move on - remember each ‘no’ brings invaluable lessons and helps you hone your approach.

One thing I've found helpful is to look at rejection as an opportunity to learn and improve. It's important to review your process and identify where you went wrong. I recommend asking your prospect what caused you/your company to lose out on the opportunity. Take their feedback and review your approach. It could be as simple as asking better questions to ensure your offer is a right fit at the right time for the prospect.

Sometimes you've done nothing wrong. People can already have a bias and are not 'really' listening to you. You should consider that when reflecting on what if anything you could do better.

Rejection is the first stage of the process. Now you know why the prospect is not interested. From this position you can gather more information to either hone your approach, improve the value-proposition of your product, or simply qualifying your leads better. Focus on the part that you can control.

Most direct selling companies are totally inflexible in how they sell products and services to customers. They have set procedures covering every aspect of the sales process all relying on the expectation that upon meeting the sales representative, the customer will submit and accept their price,terms and conditions . It is leveraged in favour of the company and making the company as much profit as possible. For instance I worked for one national double glazing company and if the customer declined the final offer price following a whole series of calculated discounts during the meeting, a week later the company would call the customer and make a take it or leave it, final offer with a further fifty percent reduction no agents commission.

Feedback from colleagues and peers is always helpful. What I find more helpful is getting some sort of indirect feedback from the potential client. May be I'm getting rejected for some simple and easy to rectify reasons like client isn't liking the way I send a quotation, the way I call for feedback after a RFQ submission or something similar which can be changed the way the client likes. So going in and asking a simple question like "do you like how I do it" can open up some interesting windows.

The trick is not to overcome rejection it is to become indifferent to it. Rejection in sales is a given, and nothing you can ever overcome. You can overcome your reaction to it.

Although part of team training is how to tackle rejections, role playing is a great way to learn how to handle rejection. Giving the exact circumstance of the Direct Sale rejection and role playing possible outcomes enables practice so the solutions are more readily available the next time you encounter an identical or similar rejection.

One thing I've found helpful is to flip your perspective, celebrate every 'No' that you get. In the simplest terms, each no gets you closer to the next yes, you should be genuinely excited when somebody tells you no because you're now closer to the next yes. When I was cold calling for sales I would celebrate out loud every time I got hung up and then move on to the next one, this was a big reason for my success! And remember, no is almost always better than maybe!

All too often this is completely overlooked or frowned upon by sales leadership. Absolutely celebrate every win, large or small. It implants confidence in your brain. It shows your brain that you can win, you do win. This is very important for winning more. When you lose, you can go back and count all your wins and review why you won and use that as momentum to keep going.

Whether you Win/Earn a Sale, never forget the Customers need; Celebrate THEIR Win when you Earn their confidence and trust, when they give you permission to call back sometime in the future, when They give you a referral: Thank Them and keep track how you got each Sale ( i.e. Offered a product to Suzie, she said No, but then said her sister might be interested, and she gives you sister Becky's phone or email and you reference Suzie and she trusts Suzie so now she trusts you, you get the Sale and keep trust of both)

In sales you will fail more than you succeed. A salesman that closes 10% of the prospect they go after is doing a great job. Rejection comes with the territory. The best way to put it is when a prospect knocks you down, dust yourself off and try again. If you give up then you will never get the business. You cant get something if you don’t ask. So you have to keep pushing and trying to get that sale. Doing so in a consistent but respectful way can gain you the business in the end. To many people are over persistent or shut down too easily. Prospects respect the salesman that keeps them on the radar but doesn’t overly push for the sale. There is a happy medium but you can’t stop trying.

It may not be that they are rejecting you or your product/service, but it may be that their problem isn’t big enough to require a solution right now. Did you have a discovery meeting to find out what their problems and pain points are? Does your product/service solve their problem? It very well could be that they aren’t rejecting you, but their pain point is not at the point yet that they need to put money into solving it. Stay in touch and visible to them and when their problem gets bad enough, you will have your chance to make your sale.

Each experience in selling is service related: do you have a product/service in need or demand? Do your research, ask the questions to fine tune your offer to the individual to match a Need they have. If they are not interested in cookware maybe they are interested in appliances.

You might as well swing for the fences. If an interaction isn’t going well, try something different. Use it as an opportunity to experiment, to learn something. Your worst case scenario is actually getting rejected and creating a data point for next time. The best case is you surprise yourself and turn it around completely. Either way, next time you approach a similar scenario, you feel better about it.

Sales is often a lonely path... It's hard facing rejection, driven to have consistent performance, increasing targets etc. Even though its often a solo path, I find in my experience, it's always better to purposefully develop a strong team culture. This increases motivation, help from colleagues, and someone to speak to when you might be in a slump, and it feels like you are being rejected every day. A team member can encourage you, and the next time roles might be reversed, and you can encourage him. We are on this world together, let's be kind and help each other, especially in sales!
