You’re developing a strategic HR plan. What are the most important considerations?

#1 should absolutely be review the organisational strategy, The reason for prioritising the review of our organizational strategy lies in the fact that our HR initiatives must be directly linked to and fully aligned with the overarching goals and direction of the organisation. By starting with a review of the organisational strategy, we can ensure that our HR efforts are strategically positioned to support and advance the broader objectives of the company. Once we have a clear understanding of the organisational strategy and the part we in HR need to play, we can then proceed to conduct this comprehensive analysis

This is very broad topic, however I would like to share my perspectives in short. While building a Strategic plan one has to: 1) Look at short term and Long term business Plans, assess where do we stand to achieve that plan through HR and then build a Short team and long term HR plan to address this gap 2) One should look at the current quality and quantity of the Manpower and accordingly develop the TA plan 3) The HR plan should also look at the Future skills needed and build Learning strategy to build those skills 4) We should also look at the Leadership pipeline and skills needed and accordingly develop succession planning and leadership development interventions. 5) The next area is the policies aligned to the needs of todays workforce

1) Most Important - Check next 5 yrs business plan. 2) Workout workforce requirement along with Skill requirement 3) Define the wages targets based on the business requirement 4) workout Hiring strategies 5) keep provision for changes in regulations and laws. 6) Keep Strength your succession Planning and develop the talent pool as much as possible 7) Workout strategies to Retain and develop Key Talents

I will divide it into short - 3 years, medium - 5 years and long 10 years. Do a company's gap analysis on the following:- 1) Our recruitment strategy on the basis of retention and succession, to assess where do we stand this gap, ensuring we recruit the right skill from the onset etc. Align the job descriptions/profiles to the company job titles. 2) Skills gap analysis of the Manpower to develop the training needs analysis and future training plans. 3) Age gap analysis to build a leadership pipeline and skills needed. Develop succession planning and leadership development interventions for retention of the talent where needed. 5) Alignment of company policies with the company strategy and Legislation.

Understanding the current landscape is pivotal in crafting a strategic HR plan. Analyzing internal and external factors like SWOT, demographics, skills, culture, and industry trends reveals critical insights. Identifying gaps, risks, and opportunities enables effective planning to meet organizational goals and challenges.

After analyzing the situation, defining clear and measurable objectives and priorities is crucial. These must align with organizational strategy and stakeholder expectations. Objectives may include enhancing employee engagement, diversity, leadership development, or adopting new technologies. Priorities should reflect the most pressing needs and opportunities identified during analysis.

While making HR Strategy it is also important to analyse external ga factors considering the significant impact it could have on the plan some areas being 1. Is the required talent available in the market - if yes at what cost 2. If the desired talent is not available then what is the cost ( money and time) of developing and skilling 3. What are the labour laws and political scenarios- are there any changes expected

Do you have buy in from top management? How strong is your team? Do you have the correct people and are they in the right roles? What about your policies and procedures? Are they solid? Do you have a handbook? Do items need to be updated or revised? Factor all of this in before you even decide to implement a strategic HR plan.

Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the HR function and its impact on the business performance. Setting clear and measurable HR goals and objectives that are aligned with the business strategy and values. Identifying and prioritizing key HR initiatives and activities that will help achieve the HR goals and objectives. Implementing and monitoring the HR plan and adjusting it as needed based on feedback and changing circumstances.

If your company operates internationally, consider cultural nuances, legal requirements, and global talent management strategies. Operating internationally requires nuanced HR strategies. I would recommend that an assessment be done as to the willingness of the organization to view the HR function as a core business function that is at the table in the decision making process. Some organization leaders view the HR function as a transactional business function that does not contribute to the development of business strategy and does not contribute to company’s bottom line.
