You're designing a product with end-of-life in mind. How do you ensure it follows circular design principles?

There are two core ways to reduce environmental impact at the material level. Check your prospect material options on these two angles and go with the one with a lower environmental impact in your context....

Selecting materials that are biodegradable or easily recyclable is fundamental. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's circular economy model, materials should be part of either a biological cycle (where they safely return to the biosphere) or a technical cycle (where they can be reused, refurbished, or recycled without loss of quality). By choosing materials that fit within these cycles, you ensure that your product can re-enter the economy at the end of its life, thereby supporting a regenerative system.

Everything starts with proper research. What a ciruclar solution acutally is heavily depends on the specific product and market. It seldomly can be generalized based on the used materials alone. The end-of-life infrastructure for materials differs significantly from one country to another. A circular solution that works in e.g. Germany might completly fail / be not sustainable in a different market. So a clear definition of goals, intended markets and consequent research about regulations and infrastructure in the intended markets should always be the first steps.

There is always the temptation to seek out the newest, out of the box thinking, material choice. While it is important to expand horizons in terms of material choice it is also important to consider the existing infrastructure (processing, die molds etc) as replacing this would also incur energy and resource cost that could negate and savings in sustainable material choice. This is by no means certain but should be included in the equation when determining materials for manufacture.

Prioritise sustainable materials that can be easily recycled or reused. Design for longevity by focusing on durability and repairability. Incorporate modularity to extend product life and minimize waste. Create a closed-loop system by establishing take-back programs and educating consumers. By embracing these principles, you can create products that contribute to a circular economy and minimise environmental impact.

Design for longevity requires that you design, not only to ensure long life of the product but also to ensure safe and effective 2nd life/reuse/recycle. Longevity means long life for the planet as well as the products.

To increase durability, put an emphasis on strong construction and premium materials to make the product last longer. To be sure it can survive repeated use, check for wear and tear. Create with Upgrades in Mind: Allow for future functional improvements or upgrades without requiring a full replacement. Take electronics that are modular and upgradeable at the component level. Encourage repairability Give consumers tools and clear instructions so they can handle simple repairs. Make sure that frequent problems with the product can be readily resolved by the user or a service provider.

Designing for durability ensures that products remain in use for longer, reducing the need for resource-intensive replacements. The circular economy emphasizes keeping products in use for as long as possible through strategies such as repair, reuse, and remanufacturing. By designing for longevity, you contribute to reducing the flow of materials into waste streams and maximize resource efficiency.

I completely agree with increasing longevity and repairability of products, no question. The current trend of short life and quickly replaced products is extremely harmful and needs to end. Upgrading (eg mobile phones) is a market demand and is unfortunately very difficult to push back on but could be could be mitigated through modular design by upgrading specific features (replace the camera on the phone rather than the whole phobe). Outside of upgrading, planned obsolescence is a disgrace and should be legislated against.

Modularity is a great way to optimize utility. If your design can be broken down into smaller components that can be replaced whenever necessary instead of replacing the entire creation. This not only reduces environmental impact but also the cost of maintenance. The only pitfall that needs to be avoided is modularity for modularity's sake where making something modular increases the amount of repair it needs....

Creating modular products allows individual components to be upgraded or replaced without discarding the entire product. This aligns with the circular economy’s principle of extending the life of products through maintenance and upgrading. By designing with modularity in mind, you facilitate the continuous circulation of product components within the economy.

Besides the obvious environmental benefits, circular design has two more positive impacts on the participants. On the production side, it reduces the cost and steps compared to producing materials from scratch. On the consumer side, it incentivises them economically through either discount via material exchange or reselling income on old materials....

Implementing take-back programs is a practical application of the circular economy, where products are returned at the end of their life for refurbishment, recycling, or proper disposal. This helps close the loop, ensuring that materials remain within the economy and are reused in the production of new products. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation highlights the importance of such systems in maintaining material flows within the economy and reducing reliance on virgin resources.

I believe this is what the EU directive on repairability was intended to accomplish. There has been some movement as a result (phone charging) but it's yet to be seen if it will be really effective in pushing companies to making their products repairable without specialist equipment or expertise that is generally unavailable. Education plays a key part here and I would like to seemore courses developed in phone, tv, laptop and tablet repair. Also crucial is making the parts cheap enough for consumers to be willing to repair rather than replace.

Your move towards sustainability shouldn't end with you. Educating the users helps you create a positive ripple effect by increasing the number of people participating in sustainability. It also makes the users appreciate you more by understanding what you're doing better....
