Definitely trying out your skills will help you master them. Recently I have used tools like theHarvester, WHOIS, Shodan… etc for threat intelligence, I have worked on the Microsoft Azure cloud environment as well practicing my skills in Assigning roles and enacting MFA for all users. I have used virustotal to analyze malicious URLs and Malicious Hashes. Always practice and don’t be afraid to try new things and use new tools.??

If you claim not to be technical, then make a plan for yourself on how to elevate yourself to a more technical level and get out of the mental cage. Practice your skills by using past incidents, breach reports or past vulnerabilities and see how they would apply or affect your organisation and how your teams and security technology stack would respond to them. Look at the indicators of compromise, reflect on how past incidents were handled but without wishful thinking or lying to one self. There are a lot of almost-free, be it unpopular, lessons to learn when it comes to mapping your own weaknesses. But it is best to identify them yourself while not handling an incident, then to learn on the job while an incident occurs.

Keep up on your practical certifications as they are not one-time efforts. You can often get re-certified and/or take practice exams to stay sharp. Outside of that, you must do the research. I start with a long series of cyber news sources that explain what is going on in the world and I definitely include various RSS feeds to obtain more technical data. Then I dig into those stories to figure out what hackers used to infiltrate and what they deployed once inside. I go further into what the response team used to find the attack and what they used to remediate the problem. All of these insights typically lead to numerous rabbit holes out of which I gain new insights and skills.
