I feel there's often too much emphasis on "product" and not enough on "problem". I'd also add "opportunity" - not all successful products are about relieving pains, they're also about creating gains! R&D agencies tend to sell their design, engineering and marketing skills - making cool stuff - and don't put enough emphasis on helping your client to understand their own vision and strategy. Many clients don't even have a strategy worthy of the name, so your first job should be to help them clarify this. I find the lean canvas to be a very useful tool for this, as it starts with your client's customer and their problems & opportunities, and focuses less on products and features. Also: discovery never ends, it's not just an initial phase!
