Startups will always be more challenging than people make it out to be but always remember why you started. The problem you are fixing and the reasons you’re fixing it. A startup will teach you more about yourself than you could ever imagine. You’ll learn new things that only move you forwards as a person allowing you to realise what you enjoy and what you don’t. Progressing you even more in your career.

From my personal experience as well as mentorship experience, entrepreneurship (or career in an early stage startup) is the fastest and best way for personal growth. The whole journey challenges a lot of your assumptions and brings our your inner fears, giving you the opportunity to widen your perspective and grow. Soon you understand what you're good at and what you enjoy working at. You find your role, your voice and grow resilience.

I start my career in big multinational FMCG for about 5 years and continue another 4 years in start-up. The learning curve is very end to end to sum up both of my experiences. For start up, for career-wise, you will learn end to end to any business process. Whether you are in Finance, Sales, HR, Supply Chain, and IT in start-up, you will 100% experience all the business process end to end. While in a stable big corporation, you will only focus on 1 particular area of business process, in a start-up, you will experience overall of the process. So if you are someone with a high passion for learning new things, having experience in both companies will be fun! Prepare to have a half-empty/half-full glass in your mindset.

Whether you fail or succeed, grown you will have young Padawan. Jokes aside, running a start-up is tough as you need to be "a bit of everything." You learn about things like HR, Marketing, Operations, Sales, and Tech. This list is non-exhaustive by the way. Additionally, you'll grow in both the "hard" and the "soft" skills area. Most of the time, you'll feel uncomfortable. And you know what? Growth often IS uncomfortable. For me personally, when I feel I start getting comfortable, I take on new tasks as I feel that the rate in which I grow is slowing down. Lastly, I do want to add that how we define "growth" is also a personal thing. For some it is financial success, or technical prowess, for others it is finding inner peace.

As a founder, you are constantly changing roles and have to slip into shoes that are a few sizes too big - all this with a lot of uncertainty. To be successful, stress compensation and resilience are necessary. The first step is to be clear about your boundaries (e.g. health, family life) and respect them. Your own personality can also have different drivers and critical triggers based on your biographical experiences. Thinking distortions can also have a dysfunctional effect because, for example, you “catastrophize” situations, no longer see the other facets when thinking in black and white, or because you unconsciously apply a mental filter (selective perception). If you recognize these, you can better regulate your stress level.

Founders of start ups need to incorporate self care, stress management & have a support network as PART of their business plan. As a mindset coach, I constantly witness how mindset is the foundation that builds or destroys a business.

I’m an entrepreneur with corporate background so my perspective is that risks exist in both career paths however the most rewarding part of commencing startup journey is that we can bring our vision and mission to life and create impacts in our own way. Entrepreneurial journey can be lonely if we don’t connect with right communities & build our value aligned community. One of the key yet unspoken topic, as an entrepreneur we need to hold ourselves accountable, self discipline and consistency matters. Failures are not final neither is success, it is a journey and rewarding because it a conscious, purpose driven journey with which we can create better future.

Like many other journeys, this one can be stressful too, but you can turn that into positive. Focus on what you can control and break tasks into smaller steps if you can. Forget what is not on your control. And no matter how big the problem is, what are the actions you can take in the end? What can you actually do? If you simplify this question a lot, you probably end up having option A, B or C maximum. Take care of yourself, talk to people, laugh. Easy to say, not so easy to get through.

It is important to understand that "Freedom" does not refer to "having more free time"... your freedom lies in the fact that you (the entrepreneur) decide to work at your own terms and not on the terms of a boss or superior. Very often, entrepreneurs work more hours than when they were employees before, but most entrepreneurs still find they have more freedom than before. All because they make the decision to work more and to accept more work as it stands in direct correlation with financial rewards.

I would make an internal list of target companies and then focus on your own list of questions you want answered to make sure the culture, role, territory, and future goals are aligned in your journey of joining or taking a new role with a startup The reality is there is no “ silver bullet” when it comes to picking a role or company but here are some guidelines that might help you navigate jumping into a startup sales role.

People who decide to create companies are freedom freaks. You prioritize having maximum freedom over minimum liabilities. It's the most abstract and least defined role in the job market that involves everything from marketing, legal, engineering, etc. And you need to know how to do everything well enough as there isn't anyone to rely on (especially as most pre-seed startup founders don't have employees).

In my experience the freedom to pick your own projects and clients will never compare to working as an employee to another company! Sure, it’s a bit scary too since you need to do your own planning, estimate things you might do for the first time but if you never stretch your experience by learning new skills and expand skills you already own you can’t reach the true freedom of achieving real growth. All that being said if you want to keep your freedom, make sure you learn from your mistakes and failures: keep a work diary. Be free with the way you write on what you learned even in failure. Your mindset will never be freed from the shackles of “employee thinking” without exploring new ways of seeing, understanding and negotiating your work!

Everything has a price and the cost isn't money. If you want to push forward, you sacrifice weekends. If you want global expansion, you sacrifice presence. The only risk is figuring out if the cost is worth the reward. Like everything in business - is there a return on your investment?

Sacrifice is a word that does justice to what startups are like; they require you to give up your other dreams, hobbies, and your human wants. Somehow, you eventually forget a lot of things that you loved doing. But if we talk about a sacrifice, it often has a pay off in a manner that is neither promised, nor documented and nor imagined. If you’re in for a sacrifice, you’re in for a ride! A bad one, and then a good one, and then a bad one; and the cycle remains until you find that curve flattening out eventually!

The sacrifice of start up is relevant depending on your perspective. If you are leaving a highly paid job with tons of benefits then your perspective is that the sacrifice is huge. If you are starting from your kitchen table in a position where you have no employer and no benefits then the sacrifice may appear less. It’s different for every founder, the lifestyle they are used to, the future they envision for themselves. The ultimate sacrifice is not doing it and then discovering that someone else is, because you just sacrificed your dream.

There is a danger of sacrifice when starting a job. Startups frequently require a substantial time, energy, and financial commitment. The need to wear many hats, long work hours, and unstable finances can all be detrimental to work-life balance. The influence of the sacrifice on social interactions and personal relationships goes beyond the individual. It's critical to balance these sacrifices with the possible benefits and have a realistic grasp of the level of dedication needed for a startup.

Make an effort, a real one, to think about what you are sacrificing not doing it. Do it while you sit on the train into the city where you sit in an office all day, he says, totally non-sarcastically

Stress, burnout, financial loss, uncertainty, compromised health, and strained family life - what a "fun" combination, isn't it? If you are in it for fun, please don't! If you want to build a startup, find a higher purpose and deeper meaning to the cause.

The founder's journey is often romanticized as a thrilling adventure, but it's not always fun. Why? It's a never-ending stack of challenges. That's a founder's reality. The drive to fix everything in expense of anything else because the company is your baby is intense. But it's a trap. The solution? Focus on a few critical problems at a time. Leave the rest. Accept that you can't solve every issue, and that's okay. Such an attitude is liberating and creates the space for entrepreneurship joy. You can work hard but not harder. But you can mix leisure with work. Instead of constant all-nighters, have offsite with founders, catchup runs, etc. Mix things you like to do with work. This is how daily entrepreneurship becomes fun.

Before I entertain starting a startup business, I wanna know what I'm worth in the business world. For example, A salary level 69 employee at Microsoft earns 1.2 million USD per year plus insane benefits. Now I know that my startup has to pay me 1.2 million per year plus insane benefits. Now I make my decision.

We can never eliminate the freedom that comes with doing what you enjoy!.The FUN that comes with your own path of doing what you are passionate about.Your goals and timelines with less micromanagement.This freedom is conducive for growth and resilience!

Thinking about a startup career has both good and tough parts. The tough parts include the chance that the startup might not work out, and there might be stress and long hours.
