You're considering a new career path in Strategy. How can you make a successful transition?

I have always held the belief that human beings can learn anything they have genuine interest for. If you do have a real interest in strategy, learn about it. But that does not make you achieve even the basic knowledge of it. Its like googling how to fly an airplane, you understand that you will need a compass but how you may not be aware how that exactly sows into the bigger flying mystery. You will need someone to hold your hand into the new learning. Get their point of view. As much as you may read and apply recipes, observing a chef is better. Now do it yourself but remember, The best of strategy managers are not the ones who know everything, its the ones that continuously learn. Stay hungry, stay foolish.

I feel that in order to have a successful transition in Strategy one should have a strong business acumen. I am listing down other things which I feel is important : 01. Collaboration and Team work 02. Attention to detail 03. Ability to identify opportunity for growth and business development 04. Innovative Thinking 05. Project Management skills 06. my top 3 things to do; - I look for opportunities to work on strategic projects in my current role or through volunteer work. - I stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and competitive landscapes relevant to my target sector - I highlight skills such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication that are valuable in strategy roles

As soon as I took my first business class, I knew Business was my passion. In my MBA, I took my first Strategy class and I found my core competence. I scored one of the highest scores on a "blind" finals test (Name was revealed after score was tabulated). I went into Management Consulting and then Strategy Consulting. Despite superior performance, my compensation was well below my "Ivy League" colleagues. I earned a diploma in Strategy & Innovation from Oxford University with Distinction (Top 5 students). Later, I was told by the head of Strategy that I did not qualify for the strategy group without a "Tech Degree. I ranked #1 out of 100+ professionals in an AI-ML program. I am building a Strategy to Execution Consulting business.

I am reminded of the Sun Tzu quote, “Strategy without tactics is the slowest road to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.” The Learn Strategy component here addresses learning execution, essentially tactics. Truly critical. At the other end is Purpose…the strategy is being crafted to achieve what? Setting the correct purpose, goal, mission, whatever, ensures all factors and alternatives are taken into account in strategy development. Example, a coworker in the real estate biz set out to develop a vehicle to transact, buy/sell “in a day.” The goal was to reduce transaction variance and risk. A better goal, admittedly more challenging, might have been to make real estate more “liquid”. Similar but broader.

Studying for a master’s level diploma in strategy combined with decades of professional experience can make for an interesting journey. Pause to reflect is provided. In this author’s experience a remarkable thing happened. The seed for a new business venture was sown. The combination of firstly, scar tissue from the trenches of financial services in over 25 years’ experience in senior executive roles across Europe, UK, Asia, & North America, and secondly, exposure to academic excellence on deeper thinking on strategy, became a motivational force. To be in a strategy role, you need to understand what the word means. Strategy is fancy euphemism for execution. Or rather structured execution. I found one thing very common in business is Networking but Right Networking is very Important. 1. Choose the right people to Network 2. Choose the right association to network, because your networking has to give you value that you opt for rather wasting time. 3. Don't choose the network that distract your focus. 4. Choose the network where they can understand or the knowledge to understand what you looking for. 5. One Right connection make everything positive, search always for it but be true to them.

Networking is not just a tool but a strategic asset in career transitions, especially in the field of strategy. Engaging with professionals through industry events and online platforms can provide real-time insights into emerging trends and best practices. These cross-pollinations spark innovative thinking. Learn from failures—yours and others'. Analyze what went wrong and why. It's often more instructive than success. Practice foresight daily. Ask "What if?" regularly. Make predictions, then check results. Remember, strategy isn't just for the C-suite. Every decision, big or small, is a chance to flex your strategic muscles.

Doing is believing... Take on a strategy role and gain real time experience is very critical to take on the Strategic role. Calculated moves and directions will help you learn on your own and give you ample experience to handle much difficult situations.

Many companies have teams or individuals tasked with creating strategic materials for senior decision makers. Examples of these types of materials include: quarterly/annual board presentations, strategic product roadmap, 3-5 year business plan, corporate presentation and annual report. Volunteer to help. Additional hands are usually welcome to gather information, create charts, do spot research. That enables you to become part of the process, including initial drafts, to review meetings through to the finished product. You'll be in the room where strategy is deliberated and iterated. It is a marvelous way to learn, as well as get to collaborate with senior executives.

Those reading your resume are working hard to understand what type of professional you are and what you can offer. Help them by telling a compelling story. One that is truthfully based on facts and convinces your future stakeholders that you will add value to the strategic conversation that is going on in their business. Do not try to tell all about your every course attended and certification gained. Do not fill the page(s) with big words. Concentrate on creating a narrative that brings you close to the reader, demonstrates that you understand what's at stake, and shows that you have the guts, talent and knowledge needed to move the needle.

Focus on building a solid foundation in strategic thinking by taking relevant courses or certifications. Network with professionals in the field and seek mentorship for guidance. Gain practical experience through internships or project work, and hone your analytical and problem-solving skills. Stay updated on industry trends and practice strategic planning through real-world scenarios. Most importantly, demonstrate your passion and adaptability—these qualities will set you apart in the competitive world of Strategy.

While highlighting strategic qualifications and experiences on your resume is crucial, consider also showcasing your ability to drive cultural and organizational change. During my transition period, I was able to experience countless interviews with the most diverse corporate cultures, from the most traditional to the most modern and permissive, and for each of these profiles, the fundamental thing is to have your history and trajectory well structured, strategically explaining each movement that your vision led you to make, making deliverables tangible, stating the "whys" of each one of them, measuring impacts, changes, and above all how decisive they were for the strategy to be fulfilled.

For the interview craft a compelling narrative highlighting your transition to strategy. Showcase how your experiences align with strategic thinking. Deepen your understanding of strategic frameworks and be prepared to apply them in case studies. Practice. Practice. Practice.
