1 Assess the role

The first thing you need to do is to review the job description and the expectations of the role. What are the main tasks, responsibilities, and challenges that you will face? How do they align with your strengths, interests, and values? How will you measure your success and progress? How much autonomy, flexibility, and creativity will you have? How will you collaborate with others and communicate with your manager? These are some of the questions that you need to answer to determine if the role is suitable for you and your career path.

It's important to define your needs before even getting to the offer stage. I find it's most helpful to create a weighted/ranked priorities list before starting interviews, then you can score each company in these areas as you go through the interview process. This practice has prevented me from making emotional decisions (helps me ignore what might seem sexy in the moment but won't meet my true needs).

2 Compare the compensation

The next thing you need to do is to compare the compensation package with your current or desired salary and benefits. How much will you earn, and how often will you get paid? What are the bonuses, incentives, and commissions that you can expect? How are they calculated and distributed? What are the benefits that the company offers, such as health insurance, retirement plan, vacation time, and education reimbursement? How do they compare with the industry standards and your personal needs? These are some of the questions that you need to answer to determine if the compensation is fair and competitive.

First, the salary range should not be a surprise. Ideally, it would have been posted on the job ad. At minimum, it should have been discussed early. Even if there's ambiguity for some legit reason, the recruiter or hiring manager should seem informed and comfortable with the topic. If I ever ask about comp and get a run-around/people seem nervous talking about it, I'm withdrawing from the process. Huge red flag. Next, definitely consider total compensation vs. base salary only, but also consider their customary increases over time. Try to determine whether they genuinely reward for performance or if you're going to get stuck. Finally, any negotiation should focus on the value you bring to the role per the job description. No emotions.

3 Research the company

The third thing you need to do is to research the company and its culture. What is the mission, vision, and values of the company? What are the goals, strategies, and priorities of the company? How is the company performing financially and reputationally? How is the company structured and organized? What are the policies, norms, and expectations of the company? How do the employees feel about working there? What are the opportunities and challenges that the company faces? These are some of the questions that you need to answer to determine if the company is stable, ethical, and aligned with your beliefs and aspirations.

4 Consider the location

The fourth thing you need to do is to consider the location of the job and its impact on your lifestyle. Where is the job located, and how will you commute there? How long will it take, and how much will it cost? What are the traffic, weather, and safety conditions of the area? How is the quality of life, cost of living, and availability of amenities in the area? How will the location affect your personal and professional relationships, hobbies, and interests? These are some of the questions that you need to answer to determine if the location is convenient, comfortable, and conducive for you.

If you'll be bound to the physical location, pay attention to the condition of the office and nature of the neighboring businesses. I've interviewed for some companies where peoples' chairs were visibly damaged, decor was 30 years old, hardware (monitors, etc.) clearly outdated and/or the office generally was a mess. I'm not saying the office needs to be fancy, but I don't want to work for a company that's going to require my physical presence without making the investment to ensure that my work environment is healthy, safe, and clean. If you'll be commuting, drive the route (or take the public transit) at the times you would for your normal commute. You need the full experience before deciding if it'll work for you.

5 Negotiate the terms

The fifth thing you need to do is to negotiate the terms of the offer with the employer. How much room do you have to negotiate, and what are your priorities and limits? What are the best practices and strategies to negotiate effectively and professionally? How will you present your case, justify your requests, and handle objections? How will you balance your interests with the employer's interests, and find a win-win solution? How will you confirm the final agreement, and follow up with the employer? These are some of the questions that you need to answer to negotiate the terms that are satisfactory and beneficial for you.

6 Trust your intuition

The sixth and final thing you need to do is to trust your intuition and make a decision. How do you feel about the offer, the role, the company, and the location? Do you have any doubts, concerns, or reservations? Do you have any excitement, enthusiasm, or confidence? What are the pros and cons of accepting or declining the offer? What are the risks and rewards of each option? What are the short-term and long-term implications of your decision? These are some of the questions that you need to answer to trust your intuition and make a decision that is best for you.
