You’re considering a Film Production degree program. What should you know before making a decision?

But before you enroll in a Film Production degree program, you should know what it entails, what it costs, and what it can offer you in terms of career opportunities and skills development.

When researching ask these questions: (1) From a percentage standpoint, how much of your schooling is class/lecture time and how much is practical, on-set filming. (2) Who funds the film projects during your time in the program? Is it predominately student-funded, predominately school funded or is there some kind of 50/50 model. Reason being if a program is heavily weighted to self funding, the students with more outside resources will have more advantages. Finally, talk to former alumni or currently enrolled film students to get the 'ground level' view of what it's really like but get multiple opinions if possible.

In my experience it is up to you how much you Get out of it. Take initiative, be eager, network as much as possible and you will skyrocket in skills and have a good time, plus you will know alot of potential people to work with after. Do the bare minimum and you wont learn that much.

Go to a school with hands up production. You want to learn the history/genre's of movies and then actually do all aspects of production from scripting, to casting, to filming and editing. If it's not hands on and you can't do the activity don't attend the school. A shorter program is fine too. You don't need to do to a 4 year university. 1-2 year programs are best and then do internships in the industry.

It’s builds your film vocabulary and technical understanding. 2. Team work. When you cultivate the habit of working with small teams in film school, you will eventually learn its complexities and advantages. You will also realize your own strong foot while working in teams. That could set you apart later in the industry. 3. You are surrounded by creative people who will not necessarily try to take your job, instead help you create your student projects. 4. While a degree in film production is good it’s not necessary.

The best thing about a film production degree is that it affords prospective students the ability to make mistakes and to hone their creative sensibilities without anyone watching or caring if they fail or succeed. Student films are supposed to be bad, that's the whole point of learning, training, and trying things with your peers. In the real world you've got to be much more risk averse due to the nature of the commercial forces in the business. But in film school you're liberated from all that. Your only goal in school is to find your tribe, discover your voice, and make as many films as you can to express yourself. It's a bonus that you come out of it a better filmmaker, with films under your belt, and with friends and collaborators.

In my experience, most of the technical side of filmmaking can be learned on YouTube or similar platforms and honed with practice. The main value of a formal education in film is bumping heads with others who are passionate about the craft, and learning the artistic language and theory of film. Those are harder to teach in a tutorial, and require focused, often guided, attention.

Another way for people to look into higher education and film production is to consider community college. I work at a community college that offers a two-year degree in film production. It's a great way for students to cut their teeth on the filmmaking experience. It's also a low cost way for students to find out whether or not filmmaking is for them. Many of our students have transferred on to four-year programs. Some have dropped out, realizing it's not what they thought. Others have finished the two-year degree and are operating independent videography businesses. And some have our degree and aren't doing anything with it... because you can teach a lot, but you can teach someone to have a fire in their belly.

If you expect to get into film production & earn a degree, you have to impress the Film Production heads who would be guiding you, & part of that is to support any/every aspect of the process. Not all student films will be great, but stay humble & support your instructors & fellow filmmakers because they need hands, & you need experience to grow. Identify which aspects of filmmaking come naturally to you & offer to assist with your skills, & other filmmakers will be there for you as it's an art that tends to benefit from collaboration. Be generous with your skills & time & you'll increase your value & things will flow.

You can learn to operate tools of film production but they will get changed after some time. Film making is a conceptual study it can’t be taught. It can be Developed by an individual only.

Do not be too fast to specialize within a specific department. Experiment, make student films, try out various departments before you finally pick your specialty.
