first and most common path to a career in IT is through a degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Information Technology. These degree programs provide students with a broad foundation in various aspects of IT, such as programming, coding, software development, database management, and networking. By pursuing a degree in IT, students learn the relevant skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the field and can specialize in a specific area of interest. networking is a crucial aspect of building a successful career in IT. Attending networking events, conferences, and workshops can help individuals connect with industry professionals, gain insights, and stay informed about the latest trends and developments in the field.

In IT, common career paths include systems administration (this is where I started!), network engineering, software development, cybersecurity, and IT support. Each path offers unique opportunities to specialise and grow, whether you're interested in managing infrastructure, protecting against threats, or creating new software solutions. Throughout my career I have met and worked with many professionals from a multitude of disciplines all of who started their I.T journeys in IT support. I think starting in IT support definitely has its merits. Though support isn’t for everyone, working within a support capacity can embolden people to interact with other disciplines within IT should they work under one umbrella of services. This can really help someone early in their career to find a path where they find their passion. My past colleagues who possessed passion would be icons throughout my IT journey, learning from someone who is passionate about what they do stays with you for life.

Getting started in a technical support role will give you the insight into what further path you want to go in IT. You may also learn you hate supporting people…. The good thing is from this role you can then look towards systems administration and security, if interested.

I think a good idea is for one to pick a specialization and stick with it. Yes it's very important to have a large base of knowledge and understand many aspects of technology, but focus on something. Be it VDI or SCCM or security, but find a niche and learn as much as you can, continuously and incrementally, throughout your career.

It's also good to consider what you're interested in or passionate about as well as whatever IT path you've chosen. Before I started specialising in IT, my main driver was to work in the third sector (not-for-profits, charities etc). The context(s) in which you work will also help you to hone your skills to a specific industry or sector which may have some niche requirements depending on what it is. All of that can make you more valuable in specific areas. Certainly in my experience, 'Experience in working within an international charity' is something I often see as a 'desirable' on job descriptions.

If I were to give any advice for someone starting their IT career. Start with a very wide net for exploration. Get your base level certifications (CompTia A+, Network+, Security+), this will give you a very solid foundation to learn from. Then explore what interests you from there, if you like security, check out the CYSA+ certification. Enjoy server work; Server+ or Cloud+ if that is more to your liking.
