I did a ton of contract work inside the capital beltway. You have to have some solid foundations and knowledge but when you get out there, it's a little like "speed dating". You learn how different organization manage different stacks of technology. How they inculcate and incorporate things like CMMI, ZTA, CDM (and maybe what CMMI, ZTA and CDM are...). You can get many years of experience in a much shorter period of time. Each new contract allows you to learn how others tackle problems and accomplish goals. This can be very valuable immediately, but eventually this will be invaluable.

Never be rude or unhelpful to a recruiter. Ok, never be rude or unhelpful to anyone...but the point is recruiters are our friends especially if you go the route of contract work. They can help you make the flexibility work. Why? If you are confident something better will come along you can take those breaks (if not, not so much, right?). It is recruiters, and relationships with them (when possible) that will help you. Otherwise, if you have opportunities few on far between, you won't have the confidence to take those breaks. This one isn't about recruiters, but my career has been helped immensely by that field, they give free advice on resumes, interviews and even career development. Keep that in mind the next time you get a call.
