Well, there are many companies that mix Software/System architecture (or engineering) though as mentioned they deal with different aspects. For Software architect, I would consider software coding background, as you need to understand the code and its limitations in order to better design a solution. For system architect, its more or the integration part between different systems. Coming from Infrastructure and HW, I went with the System architecture, as my background with HW, network, interfaces and integrations suits that well, but then it's all a matter of approach - whether to work on code design (database patterns, API design etc.) or to look on how to integrate the existing offering with other systems and platforms.

The distinction mentioned no longer holds relevance today. It may still be applicable when dealing with legacy systems, where this separation could be seen as realistic. However, in modern ecosystems and from an architectural perspective, it's imperative that both. Understanding both the systems and the application needs is crucial to define an architecture.

Outside of startups, most software and systems don't exist in a vacuum. They also don't run by themselves post-deployment. Think about Software vs Systems Architecture like a heart transplant. If creating the perfectly performing pump to support the body is your focus, then the software side is for you. If you are interested in how the organ interfaces and collaborates with the surrounding ecosystem, then systems architecture is where you will find yourself.
