Typically those reviews will have good information about what's working for many customers, but more importantly what are the key features/issues that are holding them back from your product becoming a "5 star" product.

For example, I have seen product reviews asking for certain features, but in product testing or behavioral analysis, what happened was that no one actually wanted to use the product in that way. Something I've learned with customer reviews is that they should be used directionally, but behavioral data usually speaks louder than conscious sentiment.

Firstly, determine what kind of research you want and what objectives you want to achieve. Many companies do it to prove their viability. Not really to find out what customer wants unfortunately. If it is really to find out what customer wants, an online research should include a focus group of prospective clients and another current customers. These to group will not tell you what is wanted and what is needed. Online will give the flexibility of geographical coverage and even language, besides accessibility across time zones.
