Coaching visually oriented learners is most effective when you translate abstract ideas into clear, memorable visuals. Pairing visuals with text and incorporating diagrams, color coding, and sketching can greatly enhance their understanding and retention.

I am also a visual learner and there are many "tricks" I remember from my first voice teacher that were very visual in nature that I still use today. One of them was to think of the note you are singing as a basketball (especially high notes) and always throw the "note" up and in - like making a basketball shot. The note has to float out of your throat and to the top of your head and over into the basket. I still visualize this today when singing. It really helps to free the tone and put it "in the pocket" so to speak.

Some things I have used in the past have been: Have the student look at a painting. Tell me everything they see in the painting. What is the emotional feeling they get from the painting. What are the prominent colors of the painting. Then begin to associate things they are trying to learn/memorize WITH that painting. Trying to memorize the opening aria of Tosca “Recondita armonia”? Show the student a portrait of a woman with dark eyes, dark hair, etc. all the attributes of Tosca. Then have them look at each part as the sing the aria to the painting several times. They’ll never forget their words again.

I find that using hand movements to mimic the direction of the melody, its texture, dynamics, the shape of the vocal tract, and more, is highly beneficial for my students.
