There need to be regular feedback which is to be given to the employee during the mid year appraisal to enusure that they are in the right path and motivate them to move towards achievement of goals at year end. This is very essential from employee perspective rather than informing them at during the appraisal time that the goals are not met, which will leave them at the dark side and demotivate them. Providing regular feed back will also help to enhance the performance of the employee.

Along with providing feedback, taking and listening feedback helps! It helps as a leader to know about the reportee (their thinking patterns and opinions) to help carve out the right set of goals in alignment with business and organisation goals.

The performance review aims to engage the employee in career development. Again we should not mix merit increase with performance review.

Give feedback quickly and regularly, not just in official reviews but also in everyday conversations. Talk about what people are doing well and where they can get better. Give practical advice for how they can improve. Make it easy for employees to talk openly and ask questions. Let them share their thoughts and ask for help when they need it.
