Areas with historical mining can pose as major problem with lack of knowledge of old underground working asking locals and old miners helping identifying old works through surface and underground mapping. No one wants to spend money drill a target just to find its already been mined. Don't be afraid to get your hand dirty and map those old suckers out before you point the drill at them.

Apesar de n?o ser o meio mais preciso para avaliar o solo com a sondagem SPT se obtém a resistência à penetra??o do solo e amostras de forma direta, com bom custo x beneficio.

This type of drilling can drill only shallow ground and yields only rock chips and rock flour from vertical holes. It is a type of drilling method that employs a heavy drill bit attached to a wire cable, raise and drop repeatedly to strike the bottom of the hole. The ground is crushed and chipped away by the percussion drill bit and retrieved by jacking the percussion drill bit back out of the hole. Water is also used to wash the hole for examination.

Percussion Drilling method is a hammer of weighty blows capable breaking through barriers, on the the rock to be bored through the bit which chops off the rock.

Auger drilling or augering can drill only shallow soil cover. It employs a heavy mass attached to a tripod supported wire cable, raised and dropped to strike the top of the tubular pipe case. The tubular pipe case is then rotated manually to a depth. The soil sample (e.g. clayey, sandy, silty, muddy) is retrieved from the hole with spiral bit attached to the rod and T-bar handle. Auger drilling is commonly used to locate geochemical anomalies and sometimes used for artisanal shallow water wells.

O meio mecanizado é mais caro, porém, pode ser utilizado com sondas mecanicas ou hidráulicas, o que aumenta a capacidade de avan?ar até maiores profundidades e abaixo do nível freático. Atualmente na geotecnia o método de sondagem à trado do tipo Hollow Sten Auger tem sido bastante utilizado. O método usa trados helicoidais de fundo oco que podem alcan?ar grandes profundidades em solos.

Auger drilling has series of rigid helical plates that chops and retain its cuttings on the plate and open up the hole. The cuttings are usually undisturbed. This auger drilling are common for foundation purposes in soft formations. The drilling is done to a competent formation, reinforcement cage (basket) is made and installed in the bored hole and concrete mixture is poured into the hole while being vibrated.

O método tem a vantagem de poder ser utilizado a seco, sem o uso de fluído de perfura??o. Contudo, se necessário perfurar rochas compactas, o uso de fluído passa a ser necessário. Outra característica positiva da sondagem s?nica é o alto grau de recupera??o dos testemunhos e amostras oriundos da sondagem e a rapidez no avan?o da perfura??o. Contudo, o método de sondagem s?nica é mais caro que os demais.

In fact, the sonic energy generates vibration that causes the potential energy within the rock particles to become kinetic soon the particles are displaced and the binding force holding the particles together can no longer be sustained; the rock breaks and the bit advances into the formation. This method is indeed costly, but produces quality samples.

Whatever the type of drilling, it should have the back up of workshop for smooth operation in the field and cost effectiveness of the project.

Directional drilling equipment is the only tool capable of navigating subsurface to the target. There is absolute no way to know with certainty the exact location of the payzone before drilling. So there is a need for measurement while drilling strategy to determine the direction of drilling. So when the optimum direction has been determined, the drilling bit is then steered in the appropriate direction. This would be extremely difficult with any other kind of drilling tool .

Directional drilling is the best option to navigate to the target and stay within. It is a great tool for real-time navigation, as and when required.

In my experience, directional drilling can be a successful way to increase the deliverability of the reservoir by accessing more porosity/perm. My directional drilling experience includes mile-long horizontal wells in the Mancos shale of the San Juan Basin. I would say an important factor in the success of the well is correctly locating the wellbore in relation to your geologic target. To do this, I used Petra software to locate the landing zone, then Boresight software to tie in the @bit gamma ray curves while drilling. You need a team of at least two geologists to load and correlate the gamma ray curves if you are doing a 24-hour operation so you can trade off day/night shifts. Running mass spec while drilling was helpful.

Directional drilling has tremendously decrease the risks of missing the sweet spot. Often times, people does not realise or forget that at 2-3km below the mudline, a slight deviation of 3-5 degrees can mean a world of difference in the subsurface. All the data that we work with at the beginning, gravity, magnetic, seismic etc all have resolutions of hundreds of meters at such depth. So the more accuracy we can achieve in terms of well placement at depth, the more difference it’ll make in the outcome.

The type of drilling to consider on a major project is dependent on many factors. These include the financial ability of the project, type of mineralisation, depth of mineralisation, geological conditions, thickness of overburden, depth of fresh rock etc. In the instance of thin overburden, auger drilling can be considered to delineate the mineral anomalies based on the dispersion halo of the mineralization. However, other drilling methods can be considered based on the factors stated above.

The geology absolutely matters. If your overall goals are to drill more wells, or sell/flip the one you drill, geological data is invaluable. There are so many cheaply acquired data sets a good wellsite geologist or sample catcher can gather for you.

Sendo um problema de geotecnia a sondagem mista hidráulica com a execu??o de ensaios SPT a cada metro, conjugada com a sondagem rotativa e recupera??o de testemunho nos intervalos entre ensaios é uma solu??o adequada. Se o desafio é coletar amostras de solos em profundidade sem o uso de fluído de perfura??o a sondagem s?nica é uma boa escolha. Independentemente do método é indispensável considerar os riscos e perigos e executar a atividade de sondagem da forma mais segura possível.

Actually most of the drilling will be done by a contractor. What you really need is: 1. A robust contract that ensures contractor performance and that minimises your financial risk. 2. A sensible drilling programme that maximises your understanding and that confirms the resource whilst limiting risk. 3. A detailed drilling budget that encompasses all costs associated with the exercise. 4. A robust QAQC protocol that ensures data integrity and sample chain of custody.
