You’re in charge of Business Development. How can you create a culture of innovation?

Two things... Reward failure, in that you make learning what doesn't work as important as what does work. Make sure what didn't work, and why, becomes as much a part of your institutional memory was what did work. Support those who have ideas and need to try them to prove value. Given encouragement to develop an idea, my experience is that small sums of money and time are all people need to go off and try something. Give cash directly to those who you sense have a good idea, and the will to try it even if it might fail. Do not make them go through corporate hoops in front of endless committees that add no value. They are so slow that the opportunity, and that person's enthusiasm, are lost.

Reward failure. If you don’t do that, if you punish failure, then you are saying don’t try new things and strangling innovation in the crib no matter what else you do.

Having a good group of stakeholders is really significant to a successful innovation project. From 1993 to about 2002 I was involved with a big project to improve die life in the casting industry. The PNGV and USCAR programs were sponsored by the US Dept of Energy for Ford, GM and Chrysler to partner and develop technologies in support of "Lightweighting Materials". With support from universities, national laboratories, industry associations and corporate resources, our innovations were focused to achieve better die life for aluminum and magnesium die casting. During this rare opportunity for competitors to work together, our nation's stakeholders delivered meaningful standards that are still being used today.

Only a fraction of innovative ideas will ever get materialized, so it is important to enlarge the pool of ideas as much as possible.

It is not always easy to identify key areas of development and find the right solutions to support projects that may create value. Taking initiative is key here. You may have a great idea or a very important solution that can help you create grand outcomes, but unless you are able to show for it, it may be difficult to understand for your managers and other key members to understand. To be able to support your initiative, you should always gain support and conduct experiments, gather data and feedback, and keep an open mind to collaborate and keep and open mind to iterate your plans as per requirement to create the best result. Managers have to be mindful and should support their teams in activities that show potential.

There is nothing wrong with taking an innovation which is already on the market, use it as inspiration and make even higher level of innovation out of it. Getting inspired and learn from others is a natural way, how to ignite innovative mindset. Important to add - not only good examples can help innovation - sometimes, even bad examples or false designs might lead towards the innovation too. Learning from mistakes of others is always better than learning from our own ones.

Large innovative programs are going to take time and require significant testing iterations to achieve enough learning to be able to create sufficient value to society. Learning from others is not only a smart way to get started, it's the best way to keep the momentum moving in the best direction. We can learn a lot from researching where others have had both successes and failures.

In today's world connected via information and global networks, it is not always certain that every innovative idea that you come up with is unique. One should always conduct through research about their ideas and try to find related research articles or publications that share the concept they are developing. This way you will be able to find content to support your ideas and help you make sound and well informed decisions.
