You're capturing a group photo with your team. How can you ensure everyone is in focus and on point?

Use a Tripod: A tripod ensures stability and allows you to focus on directing the group rather than holding the camera steady. Choose the Right Lens: A wide-angle lens (e.g., 24-70mm) is typically suitable for group shots. Avoid extreme wide angles that can distort faces at the edges. Aperture Setting: Use a smaller aperture (e.g., f/8 to f/11) to increase the depth of field and ensure everyone is in focus. Focus Mode: Use single-point autofocus to focus on a person in the middle of the group, or use a depth of field calculator to determine the best focus point. Manual Focus: For large groups, consider using manual focus to ensure the focus plane covers the entire group.

Positioning of your subjects can also play an import role. Remember the focal plane is in front of the lens. So, a trick I occasionally use where appropriate is to adjust the angle I am shooting at. If you have two rows of people. For example a back row stood up and a front row sat down. You can angle your lens downwards slightly to adjust the focal plane. Combine this with more general rules: 1. Use a smaller aperture (higher f-stop) 2. Remembering that 1/3 in front of the focal point and 2/3 behind will be sharp 3. Use a fast enough shutter to avoid any motion blur 4. Consider a tripod

For group shots, a tripod is great if you're working on the ground. If it's a large group though, you may need to climb a ladder, in which case you're defiantly hand holding the camera. I recommend a relatively fast shutter speed (minimum double the focal length of your lens) to reduce motion blur in the final image. Maximize your depth of field by using a small aperture. Then focus on on the front row. If you're far enough back from the group, the focus should naturally fall off towards the back, but will also carry back several rows. With most modern cameras you can work with higher ISO's without suffering image quality.

Posing and Composition Stagger the Group: Arrange people in rows with staggered heights to ensure everyone’s face is visible. Taller people can stand at the back, shorter people in the front, and children can sit or kneel. Symmetry and Balance: Aim for a balanced composition with symmetry. Ensure no one is blocking another person. Natural Poses: Encourage natural and relaxed poses. Avoid overly rigid or formal positions unless the shoot calls for it.

Work with the focal plane. If you're eye level with your group, try to get everyone as close to the same focal plane as possible. Staggered posing is a great way to make sure you can see everyone. If you're elevated, remember the focal plan will tilt backwards on the group, giving you additional leeway with larger groups and multiple rows.

Natural Light: Position the group to take advantage of natural light. Avoid direct sunlight that can cause harsh shadows and squinting. Overcast days provide soft, even lighting. Artificial Lighting: Use off-camera flash or continuous lighting to fill in shadows and ensure even lighting across the group. Reflectors and Diffusers: Use reflectors to bounce light and diffusers to soften harsh light.

Window light can produce fantastic results. Use window light to light your group. Position the window light so that it is lighting faces and not back-lighting them.

When working with large groups, it's best to work fast so you don't lose everyone's interest. Take command, speak up in a loud commanding voice, but be up-beat and professional. Let everyone know what you're trying to accomplish. Take a moment to make sure everyone is in place and make adjustments as necessary. Always take multiple frames as well. I generally count off when I'm ready to snap the shutter. That way everyone in a large group knows what's going on and will (hopefully) pay attention and follow direction. Before you dismiss the group, do a quick double check on the back of the camera to make sure you've got at least one usable image and you didn't miss anything.
