While delegating a task, it is important to understand, what sort of skills and knowlegde is needed for the task. You need to delegate towards the person, who is able to handle the task with an ease. If you have certain doubts or concerns, then rather do not delegate such a task. If you are doubtful, you will tend to slip to micromanaging that person, because you assume that he will not do the task correctly. It is also important to mention that the trust plays it′s role, as micromanagement is nothing else than a lack of trust.

Trust your team to find creative solutions. A culture of open communication where everyone feels comfortable to share ideas will help. Provide support and resources, but let go of the reins and allow individuals to take ownership of their work.

Delegating a task to a team member goes hand-in-hand with providing him a sufficient authority which is needed to execute the task. If you only pass the task to be done, then it is not a delegation, but a order. If you order someone to do something, you are expected to supervise and check every single detail. Delegation is a complex gesture covering trust, belief in the person′s skills, abilities and competence to execute. If you are not worried to pass the task to your team member, don′t be worried to pass also the execution power to him.

It is important to clarify the terminology. Micromanagement has nothing to do with monitoring progress and feedbacking. Micromanagement means that you let the people to do certain steps, however, they are unable to make decisions. Those need to be confirmed with you. On the other hand, progress monitoring/feedbacking is important, so the manager and the rest of the team understands, what are you doing, what is the progress and what can be expected as the next steps. It has nothing to do with questioning your competence or authority, which macromanagement certainly is.
