You’re building theatrical props. How do you choose the right materials?

First of all I don’t recommend ceramic, if you break on stage it can leave sharp shards. As for every thing else, when you are selecting materials for non-break away props there are four things to consider; co Budget, durability, construction time and as with anything else on stage, safety. So, basically the choice of material must address all of the above.

Period plays and regionally specific works require research and iconic design to create the illusion that sets the stage. Technical solutions are managed by specific people trained to make it work.

The general rule in my experience is always make it lighter than it should be. It will cause less harm, it’ll be less expensive than the real thing, and it’s not the end of the world if it breaks.

Props used in modern theatre often form part of the overall stage set, yet technology continues to advance in every aspect of the theatre, including special effects. Real candles, torches or fires in fireplaces are not permitted, so specialised electrical objects known as ‘practicals’ are purpose-made. Set props are objects that form part of the set dressing. Special effects props involves any type of special effect, burning fires in fireplaces, rain or torches. Breakaway props are objects that break on cue such as chairs, fake glass, bricks, bottles, or vases. Other practicals includes electrical props such as fake candles, lamps, and chandeliers. Some of these practicals may also be set dressing.

Be sure to check in with the scenic and costume designers so that if you are building at the same time, it does not clash. Its generally good to make sure you are on the same page. Production meetings are a necessity.

Always coordinate with other production teams. Make sure everyone is on the same page about how things will look. Group chats and meetings are essential for communicating and should be used/done often.

It will challenge your resourcefulness and skills but it will be worthy to create something unique and extraordinary for the performance and events.

Don't spend big money on something that is short lived. Try to repurpose whenever possible. It is amazing what you can do with imagination and creativity.

Budget is mostly the driving force. I would say, improve your scrounging skills. They will be invaluable. Look for the discounted paint at box stores and learn to color mix.That alone will half your paint budget for your productions. Get inflammability spray to address paint flammability issues…this makes found paints, I only used water base stuff, get the MSDS sheets on line and print them for your binder, keep good records and Government records will be satisfied. There are always surplus mis mixed colors tint to suit, keep good records, and you’ll be good.

If you are doing the stage of Signing in the Rain you must order a heavy duty storm umbrella. An off the rack umbrella will not last more than one technical rehearsal. The cost of the initial purchase will be me much higher but in the long run it is worth it.

We need to considered the age of the artists and their alergies, mostly if they are children. Make it sure that the objects will be confortable and safe. Talk with their parents, comunication it's very important for this.
