I always find it a bonus to hear an authentic connection to what our startup does with a personal experience - it's a small minority of candidates but it adds an extra element of alignment. With all of that being said, startups also must be financially and commercially sustainable. Having an amazing vision is great - but it also has to generate financial returns. I think finding those individuals that love the problem but also really want to win is key to alignment.

When done right, the team functions cohesively, and the diversity of skills and perspectives drives success. With the right culture fit, the entire team thrives.

To build a great startup team, I’d first look at the talent pool to see what skills and strengths are available. Then, I’d figure out the specific problems we need to solve in the startup. Based on that, I’d focus on hiring the right people with the skills needed to solve those problems, making sure we bring in the best talent to help us succeed.

This is really hard to determine - the things I look for are related to examples of exceptional achievement that is surprising. For new grads - they do not have a track record but if I see that they were a D1 athlete and premed - that's a good signal - or an elite Scrabble player or chess player or debater. I'm not saying a solid 3.8 GPA and a reputable school does not equate to growth potential - you just don't have much data. For more seasoned professionals, I always look carefully at the career transitions both within a company and when switching jobs. Individuals with high growth potential typically our pulled out of their roles to new roles - and generally more quickly than expected.

It advised individuals who want to join a startup to try to gauge the chances of success of that startup because joining a high growth startup creates opportunities that accelerate far faster than any other traditional role. It basically says that strong performers at a startup get pulled up with the rocket ship. I couldn't agree more. I think rapid promotions and opportunities are the single biggest driver of comp maximization at a startup - not the starting comp or bonus structure when you're first hired.

I think this depends on the startup and the founders. I wouldn't say startups are more or less rigid than corporate roles. Yes, corporate roles likely have more rigid rules - but startups often require in person engagement because things are simply just more messy. If you're joining a high growth startup, I can't think of a worst place to go if work life balance is important.
