Alleviating the load on our HVAC systems has profound effect on grid resilience, emissions, and our pocketbooks as consumers. It's relatively easy to identify whether you need high thermal resistance, reflectance or retention. Ask yourself "Is the aim to keep heat in or let it out slowly?" Perhaps you need to do both depending on day/night cycles or the swing in seasons? Perhaps you have a zone you want to keep cool for preservation purposes? Run through spatial priorities, pick insulation material that get you the properties you want. If you've gone so far as to insulate walls, floors and roofing, then finish strong. I plan to make big changes in my home this year. I'll be adding an air source heat pump and it's essential to have good insulation. One of the things I'm considering is having underfloor heating with cork flooring. Cork is such an underrated material.
