You're building a Data Science team. What qualities should you prioritize when hiring team members?

In my opinion, when assembling a data science team, prioritizing candidates with robust technical expertise is a good choice. The ideal candidate should have technical knowledge and business insight, but the second one will build it up with time and talking with people with more experience. A candidate with a deep understanding of statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms is a good candidate for the Team. I think that experience with data modeling is essential based on the role. Proficiency in programming languages like Python is crucial, as it is fundamental for data manipulation and analysis. Moreover, experience with querying language, data visualization tools and big data platforms is increasingly valuable to the team.

In my experience, I break down technical skills into two categories. I first look at the technical qualifications, which could be from a reputed university that provides in depth understanding of programming languages predominantly Python & R language. Secondly, the capabilities of statistical and mathematical understanding are determined. Based on these two foundations, we can further understand their technical skills. Furthermore, understanding machine learning and model development is crucial as the final step to determine the capabilities and technical expertise.

Having a problem-solving mindset is key to developing an analytical mindset. Individuals who can glance at any data and derive insights and how a problem is solved through data are very important. This individual must be able to understand the nature of the data and provide a road map on how the problem will be solved. This demonstrates an analytical mindset. The key to understanding if an individual has an analytical mindset is by providing a unique data set and how the individual take me through the process in solving the problem.

Data scientists must show an ability to dissect problems, hypothesize solutions, and rigorously test their theories, especially with large datasets, to uncover patterns and anomalies. During interviews, present candidates with real data scenarios to assess their thought process, curiosity, and deductive reasoning, in addition to their technical skills.

I will prioritize candidates with a keen analytical mindset. I will seek individuals who excel at problem-solving and can think critically about data. They should be adept at identifying patterns, drawing insights from data, and making data-driven decisions. I will look for curiosity and a passion for continuous learning, as data science is a rapidly evolving field.

Communication skills are the final stage of communicating the findings to stakeholders. Individuals need to be able to have the skills of story telling. For instance stake holders may not understand the complex nature of data science. Therefore, the individual must have good communications skills to explain complex data science related work in a simple way and ensure that other parties understand the findings and solutions a data scientist provide.

Look for candidates who can create compelling visualizations and effectively present their work, making data insights impactful for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Every data scientist comes from various skill levels and brings different skills and knowledge to a team. They are unique in their own way, in many occasions it's always good to look at each individual's traits and build smaller teams so that each skill level can collaborate with one another and provide solutions. These smaller teams put together can build the best data science team. As a team lead for data science, always work closely with the smaller teams and continue team collaborations that can take the overall team to greater achievments.

Assessing a candidate’s emphasis on collaboration during an interview involves evaluating their experiences and interpersonal skills. Some strategies I have found solid to gauge this involve asking situational and behavioral questions, discussing team projects, and checking references for insights into their teamwork skills. Ask former colleagues/supervisors about the candidate’s ability to collaborate and contribute to a positive team environment. Evaluating these aspects helps you determine if a candidate truly values collaborative settings.

A good data scientist consists of three areas. The first is programming, second is statistical and mathematical background. However, the most crucial area is domain knowledge. I always ensure that the candidate can understand the domain we work in. They need to take a step ahead and see the broader perspective of how their work can reflect in business results. They need to have qualities in strategy and how business functions and how they play a role to the data science team as well as the overall organization.
