You’re building a data governance team. How do you make sure it’s effective?

In my experience, effectiveness is best ensured by establishing organizational accountability to a desired business outcome. That means the best way to ensure the effectiveness of your data governance team is to understand, document, and quantify the expected business benefits of all your governance efforts - from the top, down. Every major initiative or program should have a business case, which can the be used to prioritize those efforts and justify ongoing or additional resources. These business cases would also be used to define what is in scope vs. what is out of scope, based on expected returns, and they would also be used to measure expected vs. actual results on a yearly basis.

It is upmost important to connect the business goals/targets with the proposed data governance targets. In this stage a preliminary data domain structure can be developed and initial data owners could be assigned/involved. In this way you ensure the business involvement and acceptance of the data governance approach to create a fully aligned scope and vision. Data Governance should be a business capability - IT should be involved, but not the main driver.
