Achieving both sustainability and cost efficiency requires a strategic approach. I focus on optimizing energy use through cloud solutions, right-sizing infrastructure, and leveraging AI for process automation. By aligning sustainable practices with cost-saving initiatives, we can drive long-term value without compromising either goal.

Traditional IT Strategy KPIs are systems resilience, scalability, efficiency, reduce TCO, deliver business value. With sustainability integral to Board agenda, ESG is a key IT Strategy KPI. To balance ESG and cost, follow these steps: 1. Shift from on-prem data centres to cloud to reduce your carbon footprint through hyper-scalers green cloud programme. 2. Shift to renewable energy for your computing needs. 3. Track energy consumption using monitoring tool, use data to reduce consumption, spend. 4. Adopt hardware, devices recycling program with 3rd parties to reduce electronic waste. 5. Adopt FinOps to identify inefficiencies, optimisation opportunities for cloud resources. 6. Build a SWOT team with experts to balance ESG and TCO.

Sustainability and cost effectiveness are gaining increasing focus and terms such as FinOps, GreenOps and ESG are now a standard part of many strategies. Trying to incorporate these elements alongside other challenging objectives can be difficult. One way this can be achieved is by utilising the sustainability programmes that vendors (such as public cloud vendors) have in place, so for example you ‘could’ be reducing your carbon footprint simply by a migration from on-prem to the cloud. However the real world data on these programmes can be hard to come by and it’s not necessarily cost neutral in many scenarios. The inescapable end result is that if you truly value sustainability, you have the able to quantify its value to your business.

Implement Green IT Practices Cost Efficiency: Adopting practices like reducing e-waste, extending hardware lifecycle, and recycling equipment can save money on new purchases. Sustainability: Encourage responsible disposal of hardware and implement device recycling programs. Invest in refurbishing equipment rather than buying new devices when possible. Example: Instead of replacing computers every three years, use refurbished components and extend their lifecycle by upgrading memory or storage.
