Working on portfolio projects is different from real industry experience. The best way got mine was to attach myself with a mentor (senior developer) and we built a real project together from scratch for a client. It helped me understand alot about how things work both in coding and meetings and all. It prepared me for my first job.

I've learned that experience often lurks where you least expect it, meaning any "experience" you have in life can be integrated into your whole developer experience. I also mean you can volunteer in an area that is completely separate from software development for example, and that can still contribute to your developer experience in a way you would not expect like bettering your soft skills which are so crucial. This also means taking advantage of overlooked and small opportunities of learning like free courses, even outdated and unrecognized ones, and even interning without or with small pay, even in a different area from software development. To advance as an aspiring software developer, take advantage and learn from any opportunity.

I can't stress enough how important this was for me. It might seem really daunting at first but there are so many great projects out there with people who are willing to assist you on your way to your fist contribution. Don't be shy! Try to approach people in slack if you feel very unsure. But doing my first contribution really was an important point in my career and i personally always ask candidates in interviews if they ever contributed.

In the early stages of your career, I’d recommend finding a specific technology you’re interested in and go deep into it. Become an expert. Know more and with deeper understanding than anyone else. This will suit you well for a good period of time but also make sure you’re keeping up with advances in this technology.
