1 Know your goals

Before you can articulate your career aspirations, you need to have a clear idea of what they are. What kind of projects do you want to work on? What skills do you want to develop or improve? What roles or positions do you want to pursue or achieve? How do you want to contribute to your field or society? Write down your short-term and long-term goals, and prioritize them according to your values, interests, and abilities. Be realistic, but also ambitious. Think about how your goals align with the mission, vision, and culture of the organization you work for or want to work for.

One thing that I've found helpful throughout my career is watching those around you (even outside of your immediate department or group). Learn what they do within your organization. You may be surprised to learn that you have an interest outside of engineering design. Or perhaps within a sub-section of your current group. In my past roles, I learned more about working in the field on a construction site helping with execution planning. I was the liaison between engineering and construction in order to help ensure project success. It was an amazing opportunity where I learned a lot and helped me get to where I am today.

When you talk about your career aspirations, show your enthusiasm and passion for your work. Explain why you chose structural engineering as your profession, what motivates you, and what excites you. Share some examples of your achievements, challenges, and learnings that demonstrate your growth and potential. Success in the field of engineering means attaining professional engineering licence, develop competent and advanced technical skills that will see you striving in engineering industry, join, participate or lead large engineering projects to gain recognition and lastly building and making a world a better place and people in it benefit on engineering projects as intended. These are my aspirations.
