I’d keep a simple spreadsheet. If you are spending a lot of time or, even worse, having a hard time keeping your list up to date, that’s a wrong method for you. In addition to some basic information, I’d include a note about what’s special about each employer so that I can remember to talk about it when I’m asked “Why are you applying to our firm?”

Keep track of the job application process is one of the most crucial steps in job hunting. In my experience, using an Excel spreadsheet is an easy but efficient way to record the process. Since I always tailor my resume based on the job description, I’d also like to organize my resumes in different folders or name the resume files with the institute or job title. This information can also be added to the Excel file. Adding more information in your excel file such as the notes you took during the initial screening interview and the follow-up emails can further enhance job search organization.

I couldn’t care less which method you use to keep track of your applications, the only thing I ask..is to keep track of your applications! There’s nothing worse than calling a job seeker and them asking, “who are you?!”, with no recollection of them sending their details to you. Keep it simple and platform independent. I keep a list on a blackboard that I can always see without switching on a device. It tracks how many applications I have sent, how many invitations to 1st, 2nd, etc. interviews I've received; I also track there the ones who've declined or ghosted me, as well as the ones whom I've turned down. I also note reasons for rejections. This board shows my campaign stats without details. The actual applications go into Evernote (any note taking app will do). All materials I've sent, meeting notes, and links get merged into one single note for each application. This way I can stay on message during interviews and am always up to date. All closed applications get moved from Inbox to Archive clearing my view.

Microsoft Notebook to track company, position, and application status. As I get interviews or notifications, I just update the notebook. I also color code based upon responses from companies.
