First, is the ability to communicate the strategy of the institution clearly to internal and external stakeholders. Clear communication builds trust. In particular how the strategy is aimed at making a positive contribution to society by addressing and solving pressing issues or adding value. Second, the ability to present the financial resources you require and in an honest and transparent way including what you will contribute in cash or kind. In other words not asking for more or less than you need and concealing what you can contribute. Third, the ability to be persuasive on the back of the strategy and technical budgeting skills. Finally, the ability to convince a funder that you are partnering for the good of society not yourself.

Fund raising requires many attributes, however, one must understand that some attributes while necessary are not sufficient. Having financial acumen, strategic thought process, tech savviness etc. while important and necessary, do not by themselves result in fund raising success. It is essential to develop a relationship with the financier / investor wherein trust is developed. At its most fundamental fund raising / investing is an exercise in reposing faith / trust in the other (fund raiser). Hence relationship building is the most important aspect that needs to be developed by a fund raiser.
