Conveying "mystery" can easily become rife with visual cliches. How do you elevate this idea? Mystery is a mental state and how do you visually express mental states? Things to ponder-1-Don't equate mystery and mood with dark lighting. Dramatic and mystery aren't necessarily dark. 2-Screen iconic films or tv with mystery as an element and see how the director and actors express it. 3-Pull visual reference to help guide you. 4-What are your subjects doing in the photo? Really concentrate on performance, body language and expressions without letting things get cliche. 5- What else is in the frame that can convey mystery? Hint-maybe nothing at all. Expressive lighting and a smart color scheme and a well cast model or actor can do this alone.
